BMW M3 vs Audi RS3: 4WD sports saloons face off
The BMW M3 is finally being offered with optional all-wheel drive. Can the latest Audi RS3, revamped for the PlayStation generation, keep it in its sights?
The RS3 has its calling cards. It’s lively, fast, characterful and entertaining in its way. I like it, and I can appreciate why younger folk might especially. But it needs to be kept to a broadly sensible price if it’s going to make rational sense to a keen driver, young or old. At £52,000 even for the entry-level RS3 Sportback, it might already have crossed that threshold.
The M3 Competition with M xDrive, on the other hand, is a driver’s car of such poise and versatility that you could make rational sense of spending £90,000, £100,000 or even more on one. Sometimes dads really do know best – not that anyone will listen.
1st - BMW M3 Competition xDrive: Switchable four-wheel drive only adds to the appeal of the most dynamically accomplished M3 there has ever been. Multi-talented and fully absorbing.

The new Audi RS 3 comes with a turbocharged five-cylinder under the hood developing 394 hp (294 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque allowing the 0 to 100 km/h sprint to take place in just 3.8 seconds. That makes it the fastest accelerating car in its class.
We have seen clips of the little RS doing even more impressive numbers with a claimed 0 to 100 km/h time of 3.1 seconds which is just insane.
Archie Hamilton recently took his new RS 3 Sedan to a drag strip to put it up against the much more potent Audi RS 6 Avant.

The Audi was running on Bridgestone Potenza Sport tyres.
Sport Auto got their hands on these two potent cars and headed for Hockenheim.
The BMW M240i xDrive packs 382 hp (285 kW) from the twin-turbo 3.0-litre inline-six while the new Audi RS 3 Sedan makes use of a turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder cranking out 394 hp (294 kW).
The two are technically not rivals in the truest sense of the word. Indeed, we’re dealing with an M Performance car going up against a full-fat RS model. There’s also the matter of body styles, although it’s less important.
The BMW is a fair bit heavier than the Audi too carrying an extra 115 kg around with it.
