The all-new DS 4 premium hatch has been announced./

DS 4

DS Automobiles is accelerating its development with DS 4. Built on a reliable base with unique and world-renowned expertise in the field of electrification, the new Premium C offering is employing refinement and the latest in engineering to win new fans.

Marion David - Product Director, DS Automobiles: "DS 4 was conceived to redefine the outline of the Premium C segment. It's aimed at customers attracted by two body shapes: the new aspirational Coupé-SUV and the traditional compact hatchback. At every stage of its design, the idea of appealing to these two segments drove our decisions."

Charismatic design paves the way for AERO SPORT LOUNGE

DS 4 has remarkable proportions. With a benchmark width of 1.83 metres and large 720-millimetre wheels (alloys up to 20 inches), for a compact length of 4.40 metres and a roof height of 1.47 metres, the dimensions appear impressive with a memorably imposing presence.

Thierry Metroz - Design Director, DS Automobiles: "Even before drawing the first pencil line, we worked for two years with our engineers shaping the technical platform. When we began the creative process, the room for manoeuvre we had in devising a new concept was incredible. Inspired by the DS AERO SPORT LOUNGE concept, the silhouette is unique in the segment with proportions that have never been seen before. The outline is athletic, very muscular, compact and sits on very large wheels. It's turned out to be aerodynamic, efficient and charismatic all at once."

DS 4 premium hatchback unveiled to challenge Audi A3

Third model in brand’s line-up aims to bring French style and cutting-edge tech to premium hatch sector

The all-new DS 4 has been revealed, along with a bold plan for the French car to straddle two sectors to take on rivals both in the premium hatchback class as well as crossover SUVs. Trading on France’s heritage of haute couture as well as the latest technology, DS hopes the 4 will compete with cars as wide ranging as the BMW 1 Series and the Mercedes GLA.

The styling is key to this strategy. Bold double daylight running lights and matrix, LED headlights (standard on all trims) dominate the front end, while the side view features striking creases and up to 20-inch wheels (optional in the UK on the 225 engines) pushed to the extremities of the wheelbase. DS is keen to emphasise the coupe-style lines at the rear of the car, where the boot lid plunges to meet narrow tail lights. In a sign of DS wanting to boost the 4’s premium feel, metallic paint is standard.

Three models will be available - a DS 4, DS 4 Cross and DS 4 Premium Line. The Cross features roof bars and black plastic cladding, designed to make it look more like an SUV, while the Premium Line is the top spec and has different wheels, the exterior brightwork is replaced with matt black trim and it also gains Alcantara inside. The sporty one, then.

Technological highlights include level 2 semi-autonomous driving, Active Scan Suspension (borrowed from the DS 7 Crossback), and a detailed head-up display showing everything from full navigation instructions to what song is playing. The Active Scan Suspension scans the road ahead, between a distance of 5m and 25m, and alters the suspension making it firmer or softer depending on what’s needed. Night vision is also offered.

DS boss vows to “do better” in UK with new model

CEO Beatrice Foucher hopes the new DS 4 will provide the springboard to better UK sales

DS CEO Beatrice Foucher says she is “not happy” with the sales performance of the brand in the UK so far but is confident the new C-segment DS 4, soon to be launched here, can provide a springboard into this country’s “very large and competitive” premium market.

“We have been underperforming,” she says, “but I don’t believe our cars are the problem. We have great products and we are happy with the way they are positioned. The cars we have coming also fit the market. It is more a matter of customer mindset, of communication. We have not yet found the right way to persuade UK premium customers to move on from their traditional brands. We must work harder on that.”

DS will continue to sell its French-oriented 'haute couture' design message, says Foucher, although she believes the firm must also stress its cutting-edge technology – such as its plug-in hybrid models that also offer 4x4 – because “we are not selling handbags”. With the right marketing, she believes the DS 4 can achieve “a big sales increase in the UK” although she admits to not yet having all the answers in what has proved a difficult market.

Alfa Romeo and DS brand to jointly develop vehicles under Stellantis

A high-ranking official at the PSA Group’s DS brand has confirmed the French company will jointly develop future models with both Alfa Romeo and Lancia under the Stellantis umbrella.

Marion David, who holds the role of product director at DS, confirmed the plans to Automotive News Europe, suggesting the first co-developed products could hit the road by 2024.

“We are working with our Italian colleagues on specific premium modules, powertrains and features to differentiate the premium brands from the mainstream brands,” David said during the reveal of the new DS4.

As the report points out, Alfa Romeo, DS (formly a sub-brand of Citroën) and Lancia are listed as “premium brands” on the new Stellantis organisation chart.

All new DS models to be electric-only from 2024

French company will be the first Stellantis brand to make the switch to pure EVs

French manufacturer DS Automobiles will switch to electric-only production for new vehicles from 2024, one year earlier than originally planned, and four years earlier than other Stellantis-owned brands.

The announcement was made on social media by Jules Tilstone, managing director of DS UK. The announcement came as parent company Stellantis announced its half-year results, in which the group announced all segments were in profit, with an average 11.4% margin.

“It’s been a turbulent time for the automotive industry, but great to see the Stellantis teams pulling together to deliver such a fantastic result,” said Tilstone. “We’ve also announced that from 2024 all new models from DS will be launched as full electric only.”

The firm originally announced it would move to electric-only from 2025, while other Stellantis-owned brands including Vauxhall/Opel will begin to switch from 2027.

DS currently has several electrified models on sale, including the all-electric DS 3 Crossback E-Tense, with the DS 3, DS 7 and DS 9 models all offered with plug-in hybrid power. Existing combustion models will see out their lifecycle as scheduled beyond the 2024 date.

DS to go electric-only in 2024 with first bespoke EV

Stellantis's premium brand will make all-electric switch with new model and electric version of DS 4 hatch

French manufacturer DS Automobiles will mark its reinvention as an electric-only brand in 2024 with a new full electric version of the DS 4 hatchback and its first bespoke electric model.

The firm confirmed earlier this year year will switch to a fully electric global line-up in 2024, one year earlier than originally planned and four years earlier than other Stellantis-owned brands.

DS has revealed that it will launch a new EV version of the recently revealed DS 4 – currently available in plug-in hybrid form – in 2024. That model will also be joined by the firm's first electric-only model, which will also be the first bespoke EV built on Stellantis's STLA MEDIUM platform.

That architecture is designed for C- and D-segment vehicles, although DS has yet to detail what form the new model will take. However, it has confirmed plans for the new machine to feature a "high-capacity battery with up to 104kWh" of capacity, which is claims will allow for a range of more than 400 miles.

DS boss Beatrice Foucher called the decision to make the brand all-electric by 2024 "a daring plan." She added: "The car industry is experiencing a change whose breadth and speed are unprecedented. As a pioneer, DS Automobiles has anticipated this move, with electrification at the centre of its strategy."

DS will be an all-electric brand by 2024

Former posh Citroens will be EV-only in just a few years’ time

Big news in the electric car world. Or should that just be ‘the world’ these days? Anyway, posh French brand DS has announced that it will only build EVs from 2024 onwards. For those who’ve forgotten what year it is (we wouldn’t blame you), that’s less than three away. Crikey.

Has there ever been a manufacturer more suited to electrification, though? DS describes itself as an ‘avant-garde premium brand from Stellantis’ and surely silent powertrains will help its pursuit of luxury.
It has also been heavily involved in Formula E – winning back to back titles in 2018/19 and 2019/20. It recently committed its future in the sport until 2026 too, and has begun developing ‘an even more powerful and efficient single seater’.

Apparently from 2024 there will be a fully electric version of the DS 4 pictured above, and a new design based on Stellantis’ STLA MEDIUM platform that’ll house a 104kWh battery for over 400 miles of range. Sounds promising (if a little shouty), doesn’t it?

CAR REVIEW

DS 4

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“DS's most impressive and finessed car yet is easier to want than its rivals”

On the road, the general favour brings no great surprises. It feels pretty classically soft and French, especially in the one with predictive dampers when you've set it to 'comfort'. But detailed development brings DS's most impressive and finessed car yet.

It's soft but not floppy. The steering isn't that engaging but it is precise. Performance is fine. Main driving niggle is the usual one from this French Group: the autobox shift timing is clumsy.

You get a lot of tech for the price, and most of it works well. You also get a decidedly lush interior.

Whether or not you actually want a car with such self-conscious styling is a question that comes up with any DS model. But with the 4, we think it's easier to want than the others. And that styling wraps a properly competitive car.

DS Automobiles unveils the N°4 - a premium electric hatchback with a touch of French flair

DS Automobiles just pulled the covers off its latest creation, the DS N°4. This new model enters the busy premium compact hatchback world, bringing a unique blend of French design smarts, fancy features, and a strong push into electric power. It's designed for buyers who want a car that looks sharp, drives well, and packs the latest technology, especially when it comes to electric vehicles.

The DS N°4 stands out right away with its fresh face. The front looks flatter and wider than previous DS models, featuring a bold black grille with tiny details. It gets a new light setup inspired by earlier concept cars, with lights that stretch out from the sides and meet up in the middle at a lit-up DS logo. The hood even stretches a bit further forward, sitting slightly over the grille, which adds to that wide look. This new front design, including those striking lights, will show up on all future DS models, no matter what engine they have. For the fancier ÉTOILE version, the car gets special DS MATRIX LED VISION headlights that can change patterns based on driving conditions.

Size-wise, the DS N°4 measures 4.40 m long, 1.87 m wide, and 1.47 m tall. These numbers give it a shape that looks both sporty and elegant on the road. The sides are smooth but have strong lines, and the door handles sit flush with the body, keeping things looking clean. Standard models get 19-inch wheels, but you can get even bigger 20-inch ones on the plug-in hybrid version. The roof looks like it's floating and can be painted black separately from the rest of the car, making the shape look even more dynamic as it slopes down towards the back.
