New Genesis G90 to rival BMW 7 Series in 2022

Luxury flagship shown for the first time as part of rapid expansion of brand's line-up

Genesis has revealed the exterior of its new G90 luxury saloon, which will rival the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class globally when it goes on sale next year.

The second generation of the nascent premium marque's flagship has been previously spotted testing in Germany, prompting speculation that it would get a European launch, unlike its predecessor. Genesis says it "plans to expand its presence in the luxury sedan [saloon] market not only in Korea, but across the globe," but Autocar understands there are currently no plans for the model to be sold in Europe.

In terms of its design, the G90 closely resembles the mid-sized G80, but with noticeably more space between its wheels – in line with its luxury billing – and a raft of bespoke design cues.

It features the now-familiar dual-line LED headlights that adorn the front end of its sibling models, as well as a sizeable shield-shaped grille – but Genesis highlights that the grille has a "layered architecture" finish, with two "G-matrix" patterns stacked for a three-dimensional effect.

Unlike other Genesis models, the G90 also features a clamshell bonnet "in order to eliminate panel gaps and create a sleek impression".

At the rear, the Mk2 G90 is brought into line with newer models courtesy of its distinctive twin light bars, and to draw focus to that element, the reversing lights, sensors and numberplate have been moved to the bottom of the car.

The G90 saloon is yet another brand new Genesis

The Genesises (Genesi?) are coming thick and fast. This bold S-Class rival is the latest

What is the plural of Genesis? Genesises? Genesi? It’s Geneses if you consult an online dictionary. It’s something we ought to make a decision on quickly, though, because the luxe Korean brand is cranking out new cars at a significant rate of knots.

We seem to have gained half a dozen already this year, but here’s another: a big posh saloon called the G90. Whether it’s your cup of tea or not, it’s surely a traditional three-box palate cleanser after – ahem – other cars revealed this week.

There is much upper-case design speak to fluff around the fact there aren’t yet any powertrain or key tech details for this svelte new BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class rival.

“When viewed from the side the Parabolic Line starts from the hood and flows along the bottom of the window to the trunk and is elegantly unbroken,” we’re eagerly told. “G90’s refined and voluminous body has been further enhanced with the Athletic Power Lines on the fenders around the wheels, projecting power and dynamism.”

Genesis G90 breaks cover as Hyundai’s plan to tackle Mercedes-Maybach

The Genesis G90 has been unveiled as a new flagship offering from the Hyundai Group. This new product will be pitted against other high-end sedans such as the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class.

With just the exterior being shown to us, the Genesis G90 shows off a super slim Two-Line headlamp design, a side profile that is defined by the Parabolic Line which runs from the front to the rear and a rear that is finished with unique look with the full width Two-Line taillamps and lettering.

The Genesis G90 long-wheelbase model features more space to the second-row door and C-pillar area thanks to its expanded wheelbase longer than the sedan model. This allows for more spacious rear seats. It also offers a 20-inch wheel design exclusive for this model.

Additionally, the Parabolic Line formed by the DLOs that surround the windows and the B-pillar are finished in chrome, allowing the long-wheelbase model’s side profile to make even more of an impression. The model also has exclusive front and rear bumper designs that feature chrome decorations on its rims for enhanced elegance and dynamism.

With the Genesis G90, Hyundai is taking on the Mercedes S-Class

Hyundai’s luxury division Genesis has pulled the covers off its new flagship sedan. With the Genesis G90, the carmaker is seeking to mount a better challenge to German contenders like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7-Series, which currently dominate this aristocratic automotive class.

Sadly, apart from revealing the exterior design, Genesis is keeping quiet about the rest of the vehicle and the technologies that lie beneath its modernised design. What we do know is that the company will offer it in both standard and long-wheelbase guises, the latter stretching out a further 190mm to possibly give Genesis a true rival to the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class.

According to Car and Driver, the new flagship sedan is likely to offer Hyundai’s 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engine as well as an electric powertrain, but at this stage there’s no word on whether the current G90’s normally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 will continue to be offered.

The exterior design of the new G90 takes inspiration from other contemporary Genesis models such as the GV80 and the GV70, as you’ll see in the imposing ‘Crest Grille’ and double-decker headlights. As for its three-box silhouette, dare we imply that there’s a hint of Bentley and Jaguar in its stately lines. Furthermore, the long-wheelbase model will be available with exclusive 20-inch wheels.

“The G90 will redefine the flagship luxury design experience in a unique way only offered by Genesis.” said Genesis design head SangYup Lee. “The G90 is the ultimate expression of Athletic Elegance that carefully balances dynamic driving and an elegant rear seat experience.”

The 2023 Genesis G90 Revives The Long-Wheelbase Luxury Sedan

And yes, we're actually getting the stretched version of the flagship in America.

It’s hard not to emphasize just how well Genesis has been killing it lately. Hyundai’s luxury line has rapidly come into its own to release increasingly gorgeous, fun to drive, and affordable (for a luxury car) vehicles. And the 2023 Genesis G90 sedan looks to be just that.

The last time the G90 got a serious makeover was back in 2020, when Genesis found the styling cues that began to distinguish it as its own automaker. Since then, we’ve seen sedans, SUVs, and even an electric model introduced, but this G90 might just top them all.

The massive crest grille (which is admittedly Genesis’ most polarizing feature) has been shrunk just a bit, and it’s flanked by the slim, double-line headlights that carry back to illuminate over the wheel wells. Add in the clamshell hood and the similar “Two Lines”-style turn signals, and you have a smooth body that flows from front to back with satisfying symmetry.

Hundai-Kia Continues Their Lighting Design Onslaught With The Genesis G90's Indicator Repeaters

Indicator repeaters tend to get overlooked, but not by Genesis' lighting team, which is fantastic

Recently, I’ve written an awful lot about the lighting design coming out of the combined Hyundai-Kia automobile-producing concern, and the reason is simple: the lighting designers working for the Korean automaker are ****ing bringing it. A fantastic example of this can be seen in the just-unveiled 2023 Genesis G90 sedan’s turn indicator repeaters.

I brought this up at my weekly Blinkie meeting, the colloquial name for turn-indicator enthusiasts, at my local turn signal enthusiast bar, Flashy Amber’s. One member of the group insisted that they didn’t feel turn signal repeaters qualified as proper indicators, which is bullshit gatekeeping for which I will not stand, so I smacked is drink from his hand to the ground and had him escorted out of the premises.

In case anyone out there is somehow unfamiliar with what an indicator repeater is, let me take a moment to refresh you. Essentially, these are an extra set of amber lamps that blink along with the turn signals, but are set on the side of the car, generally between the trailing edge of the front wheel arch and the front door.

Most modern cars include them on their side mirrors, but many cars have them on the front fenders. They’ve been a requirement in Europe, Japan, the UK and most of the world since around 1986, but have never been required in America, though there is nothing that forbids them, either.

Genesis G90

Genesis G90 brings its first full model change in three years following an enhanced version in 2018, representing the most elegant interpretation of the brand's luxury design identity. The model introduces a bold new direction, with advanced assistance features that make driving easier, along with a variety of new technologies that enhace passengers' journeys.

Genesis' most elegant exterior yet

Genesis G90's front includes a new Crest Grille and sleek Two-Line headlamps, which are designed to resemble the brand's emblem. The Crest Grille at the front takes the model's upscale image to the next level with its Layered Architecture design, comprised of two G-Matrix patterns layered on top of one another to create a three-dimensional effect.

The Two-Line headlamps, located on both sides of the grille, are the thinnest on a Genesis model yet. The headlamps' slim design was made possible by intercrossing the lens of the DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) with the turn signal, the high beams and the MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology-powered low beams. The low beams in particular combine roughly 200 micro optic lenses per module with ultraprecise technology. The resulting lenses are smaller than those of legacy projection lamps, but provide the same level of light intensity - further reinforcing the G90's high-tech image.

Genesis G90's status as a flagship sedan is further strengthened by its Clamshell Hood. The Clamshell Hood design features a single panel that combines the hood and fenders to eliminate panel gaps, lending the G90 its definingly sleek design. In addition, the Guilloché patterned emblem, which is nearly 80 percent thinner than the previous version, adds a finishing touch of class and distinction.

Genesis G90 interior and engine details revealed

Genesis has fully unveiled its new flagship model, the G90, which will be available in a choice of a sedan or a long wheelbase version in select markets. The G90 brings the first full model change in three years following its facelift in 2018, and introduces a bold new direction with advanced assistance features and a variety of new technologies.

The front of the Genesis G90 includes a new Crest Grille and sleek Two-Line headlamps, which are designed to resemble the brand’s emblem. The Crest Grille at the sports a Layered Architecture design, comprised of two G-Matrix patterns layered on top of one another to create a three-dimensional effect.

The Two-Line headlamps, located on both sides of the grille, are the thinnest on a Genesis model yet. The headlamps’ slim design was made possible by intercrossing the lens of the DRLs (Daytime Running Lights) with the turn signal, the high beams and the MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology-powered low beams. The resulting lenses are smaller than those of legacy projection lamps, but provide the same level of light intensity.

The Genesis G90 also sports a Clamshell bonnet that consists of a single panel that combines it to the fenders to eliminate panel gaps. In addition, the Guilloché patterned emblem, which is nearly 80 per cent thinner than the previous version, adds a finishing touch.

When viewed from the side, the Parabolic Line design starts from the bonnet and flows along the bottom of the window to the trunk. The DLOs bordering the first and second rows of the vehicle are harmonised by thick C-pillars.

At the vehicle’s rear, as key elements of the Genesis design language, the Two-Line rear combination lamps are elongated with the boot with the Genesis lettering emblem positioned between them.

Functional elements like the license plate, various sensors, and the reverse lights have been lowered to complete the image of the G90’s rear design.

The interior of the Genesis G90 is designed to satisfy both customers who take the wheel themselves and those who are driven by chauffeurs. The driver’s seat brings to life Genesis’ interior design ethos of the Beauty of White Space, harmoniously combining the feeling of a high-tech device with new technologies together with the luxurious details that come with analog sensitivities.
