Kia EV6

Kia Corporation has revealed the first images of the exterior and interior design of EV6, its first dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV).

Kia EV6 was designed under the brand's new design philosophy 'Opposites United', which takes inspiration from the contrasts found in nature and humanity. At the center of the design philosophy is a new visual identity evoking positive forces and natural energy, with contrasting combinations of sharp stylistic elements and sculptural shapes.

Boasting a distinctive crossover-inspired design and based on the brand's new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), EV6 is Kia's first dedicated BEV to be influenced by the new design philosophy, which embodies Kia's shifting focus towards electrification.

"EV6, as the first dedicated Kia EV, is a showcase of human-centered, progressive design and electrified power. We strongly believe EV6 is a compelling and relevant model for the new EV market," said Karim Habib, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Design Center. "With EV6 we aimed to create a distinctive, impactful design by using a combination of sophisticated, high-tech features on pure and rich volumes, while providing a unique space as a futuristic EV."

2021 Kia EV6 is all-new electric flagship with 310-mile range

Performance-focussed crossover spearheads Kia's new EV family with dramatic look and ultra-fast charging

The new EV6 is Kia’s first bespoke production electric car and pairs a radical new design with unprecedented levels of performance for the brand.

Revealed ahead of its official full debut later this month, the EV6 will spearhead a wave of new-era electric cars from Kia. Each will be badged EV followed by a number corresponding to its size. So the EV6 crossover is a mid-sized car, which leaves room below for compact SUVs, hatchbacks and saloons, and for larger SUVs at the top of the range. Kia will launch a further six bespoke EVs by 2027.

Full technical specifications are yet to be confirmed, but the EV6 shares its E-GMP platform with the recently revealed Hyundai Ioniq 5. This means it will have 800V hardware for charging speeds of up to 220kW and it should charge from 10% to 80% capacity in 18 minutes.

The E-GMP platform is compatible with rear- and all-wheel-drive layouts and can accommodate a 72.6kWh battery pack for a range of around 310 miles – which the EV6 is expected to use.

Farewell, 'tiger nose grille'? New Kia EV6 debuts fresh design language

The new Kia EV6 has been revealed, with the Korean firm’s first dedicated fully electric vehicle also debuting the brand’s latest design language.

While technical details will be released later in March 2021 at an official event, Kia has opted to release a handful of images of the newcomer.

Riding on the latest Electric-Global Modular Platform, the EV6 is described as having a “distinctive crossover-inspired design”, embodying Kia’s “shifting focus towards electrification”. The automaker says this new design philosophy – which it calls “Opposites United” – will “inform the design of all future Kia models”.

Up front, you’ll notice the distinct lack of Kia’s long-time signature “tiger nose grille”. Instead, the company has introduced something it calls the “digital tiger face”, a “design progression evoking the spirit” of the former for the electrified era.

The rear end, which Kia says was “designed in part to realise ultimate aerodynamic performance”, features a sloping C-pillar with an integrated gloss-black insert. The roof spoiler, meanwhile, channels air down towards a raised lower spoiler that sits atop the full-width taillamps.

New 2021 Kia EV6: dual-motor EV6 GT gets 577bhp

Flagship performance-focussed crossover will be faster than a Porsche Taycan 4S; priced from £58,295

Kia says it is taking “electric performance to another level” with the GT-badged hot version of its new EV6 electric flagship, which will top out a range comprising two- and four-wheel-drive variants with a choice of different battery sizes.

The dual-motor EV6 GT sends 577bhp and 546lb ft to both axles, and is expected to get from 0-62mph in just 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 162mph, making it not only the quickest Kia yet built, but also more powerful and faster than the Porsche Taycan 4S.

Lower down the range, the EV6 is available in either rear-wheel-drive form with a 77.4kWh battery giving 316 miles of range, or with four-wheel-drive and a smaller 58.0kWh power pack, which will likely give a range of around 250 miles. The two-wheel-drive version uses a 226bhp motor on the rear axle and is capable of 0-62mph in 6.2 seconds, while the non-GT four-wheel-drive version ups power to 321bhp and packs 446lb ft for a 0-62mph time of 5.2 seconds.

New Kia EV6 detailed: 0-100 km/h in 3,5 secs; up to 510 km range

Kia has revealed detailed specifications for its new EV6, with the top-spec GT version of the fresh all-electric model capable of hitting 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 3,5 seconds.

Will this newcomer be available in South Africa? Well, Kia SA has indicated a local introduction of the EV6 is under consideration and says at least one example will be brought in for evaluation. Time will tell, then.

This sleekly styled crossover, which is the first dedicated battery electric vehicle launched under Kia’s latest design philosophy (and the first to ride on the group’s new E-GMP architecture), will be offered with a number of powertrain configurations.

The South Korean firm says the EV6’s 800 V charging capability means it can go from 10 to 80 percent battery charge in “just 18 minutes” (this is interestingly the case for all battery variants), while the flagship GT version is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed 3,5 seconds, before topping out at 260 km/h.

Here’s why Kia is moving away from its signature tiger nose grille

Kia’s head of design has explained the South Korean firm’s decision to “evolve” its signature tiger nose grille.

Karim Habib, who heads up design for Kia, was speaking to journalists during an online media session attended by CARmag.co.za.

Making reference to the freshly revealed EV6, Habib said although the tiger-nose grille had become a “recognisable iconic feature” for the Kia brand, “here we wanted to evolve that in the digital era”.

“We definitely want to keep the ‘tiger nose’ in one shape or form. We want to keep that recognisability – that consistency – for all Kia products,” he said.

KIA’s all-electric EV6 offers up to 430kW and it’s under consideration for SA

SOUTH AFRICAN EV6 CUSTOMERS

KIA SA confirmed that the EV6 is under consideration for the South African market, however it’s only bringing one car to Mzansi this year to conduct internal studies on the feasibility of running these cars here. Naturally, uptake of BEVs have been slow in South Africa as the technology is fairly new and the electric cars that are available here aren’t exactly the most affordable.

We believe the EV6 GT, however, is the ideal car for the South African (who can afford it) because it genuinely offers a decent amount of range to prevent any form of range anxiety and it has enough performance punch to scare Porsches and Ferraris from a dig. It’s got this wonderful blend of The Jetsons, yet it’s contemporary inside and it’s a fresh take fro a manufacturer that can only improve its offerings in this sector.

If the EV6 GT is launched in South Africa, you can expect it to be priced in line with the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GTs of this world as it’s that level of car from what we’ve seen so far. We can’t wait to get behind the wheel to tell you what a 430kW electric KIA feels like at full tilt.

Kia design exec says drivers are getting better at using touchscreens

The head of design at Kia says the ability of drivers to use touchscreens “is increasing daily”.

Karim Habib, who heads up design for the South Korean firm, was speaking to journalists during an online media session about the new EV6 attended by CARmag.co.za.

“The abilities of people to work with screens – to read screens – is increasing daily. The digital natives can do much more than people like me can on the screen,” the 51-year-old said.

“That being said, of course, when it comes to driving, there are certain [internal safety] requirements that are important to us at Kia,” he added.

Analysis: why Kia UK is amped up for an EV future

Strong sales and high interest in new EV6, despite grant cut, are inspiring UK managing director Paul Philpott

In the immediate wake of the pandemic and with the government’s 2030 ban on the sale of new ICE-only cars fast approaching, 2021 has the potential to be a defining year for several brands in thie UK, but few more so than Kia.

The Korean manufacturer’s first bespoke EV, following on from electric derivatives of the ICE-powered Niro and Soul, is the headline-grabbing EV6 performance crossover.

Despite being capable of outpacing the Porsche Taycan 4S in its most potent GT form and offering a Jaguar I-Pace-beating range of 316 miles, it’s priced from a mere £40,895 – just £3350 more than its far less sporty Soul EV sibling.

Kia is offering a free Apple Watch for select customers who buy a 2022 EV6 First Edition

In an effort to help drum up interest in its newest EV, Kia is offering a sweet deal: a free Apple Watch if you’re lucky enough to secure the right model.

Kia is offering a free gift for those who are lucky enough to get their hands on one of the first 2022 EV6 First Edition models. The gift will go out to the first 1,500 customers who pick up the electric automobile. After that initial batch is bought up, no more free Apple Watches for customers who buy the vehicle.

The news was first reported today by CNET. Kia is hoping to sweeten the deal for any potential customer considering the brand new 2022 EV6 First Edition. But the Apple-branded smartwatch isn’t the only part of the deal. Kia will also offer up an at-home EV charger or charging credits, too. Customers will choose one of the three options when they buy their new car.

Kia hopes folks who pick the Apple Watch will be quick to utilize the company’s Connect services. Those are bundled with the vehicle. They will allow owners to start or stop their automobile from the watch directly, check charging status, and much more.
