Kia EV6 crowned the best charging EV in the latest P3 Charge Index
P3 Group offers engineering and software development services for automotive and energy sectors. The company also created the P3 Charging Index - an independent comparison tool that can show real charging speed of different electric vehicles.
The P3 Charge Index was first established in 2019 and this year we see its third edition. The CI is trying to make more sense out of charging speeds, since peak kW is not the most relevant metric as we explained recently. Instead of using kW the CI uses a combination of energy consumption and charging curves of the electric vehicles mapped over the charging time. The resulting index aims to provide a more accurate indication of real charging speed. Index of 1.0 means the car can recharge 300 km in 20 minutes.
For the first time the vehicles taking part in the test were divided into three groups based on their net list price: luxury class for vehicles over €65,000 then premium class for vehicles from €35,000 to €65,000 and finally the compact class with prices below €35,000. Here is the complete list of 21 cars (and their battery capacities) taking part in the test:

But the supplement of £5725 over the GT Line S version seems reasonable, considering the extra performance, plus the GT gets a standard heat pump for more efficient cabin temperature regulation, whereas it’s a £900 option on the lesser car.
It might seem unlikely that too many brand-conscious buyers will be cross-shopping this Kia with the Porsche Taycan or Mercedes EQC, but they really should be. The regular EV6 already feels like a benchmark in terms of its blend of practicality, price and performance, but the GT moves that on with what looks to be an unbeatable quantity of electric bang per buck when it reaches the UK later this year. Make no mistake: Kia is pushing its way to the forefront of the electric revolution.

Kia is making some bold performance moves in the world of electric vehicles. The 2023 Kia EV6 GT ups the performance ante by bringing supercar rivaling performance with electric efficiency.
A regular EV6 is already quick. The 320-horsepower EV6 GT-Line hits 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. But Kia thought it could do better, and it threw on all the EV performance goodies it could.
A 77.4 kWh battery pack powers both a front-mounted 160 kW motor and a rear-mounted 270 kW motor. Total combined output is a sportscar-like 576 hp and 546 lb-ft of torque. With that kind of power, Kia says the EV6 GT can hit 60 mph in 3.4 WTF seconds.
And just in case you thought they were making this up, Kia got AMCI (the same independent company that proved that the K5 GT was a better sports sedan than a BMW 330i) to pit the EV6 GT against a Ferrari Roma and a Lamborghini Huracan Evo. The EV6 beat them both.

Kia America "revealed" the EV6 GT today "for the first time in North America". The car "debuts" at Monterey Car Week, but it's interesting how something that's been official for well over a year can do any of these things.
Kia announced the EV6 GT alongside all the other EV6 variations back in March of 2021. It's the impressive top of the line with 576 hp, and it's finally going to become available in North America in the fourth quarter of this year (so October to December). All buyers will receive a charging credit of 1,000 kWh at Electrify America stations, usable over three years.
To celebrate the fact that it's going to ship this model about 19 to 22 months after initially announcing it, Kia America felt the need to "reveal" it officially... again.
So let's go through the numbers real quick, although our specs page is also your friend in this case. The EV6 GT accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, and from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. In independent testing by AMCI, it out-accelerated a Ferrari Roma and a Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder RWD in a drag race, so it's no slouch for sure.

Kia EV6 Coming to SA in Limited Numbers
The Kia EV6 GT is the Korean brand’s most powerful production vehicle and the good news is the EV6 family is on its way to SA.
The Kia EV6 GT is a frighteningly fast and advanced vehicle. Packing 430 kW and 740 Nm, this interestingly-styled car can sprint to 100 kph and maxes out at 258 kph.
Under the skin, there’s 800V charging architecture, a 77.4 kWh battery, a front mounted 160 kW motor and a rear mounted 270 kW motor. The handling and stopping list is also impressive, with huge brakes featuring 4-piston callipers, quicker ratio steering, electronically adjustable suspension, stiffened chassis, as well as an electronic limited-slip differential. There’s even a drift mode!
As far as charging is concerned, if you’re plugged into a 350 kW DC charger, you’ll go from 10-80% in under 20 minutes. South Africa doesn’t have chargers that potent yet, so expect slower charging times when the vehicle makes its way here. There are more and more chargers being installed in SA, view them here.
The Kia EV6 is highly lauded in European car markets, and we’re interested to see how its received and what the take up is locally. Yes, that’s right, it is coming to South Africa.
Don’t expect to see many on the roads as demand globally has been exceptionally high and like most brands, stock shortages are likely to come into play. According to a communication from Kia SA towards the end of August 2022, the brand said “while a local launch date has not been set, the available number of units will be small initially”
“We sense a healthy appetite not only for electric vehicles as a whole in South Africa, but also for the EV6 specifically,” says Gary Scott, CEO, Kia South Africa, highlighting that there are many factors influencing the decision, not least of which a consistent supply. “We are mindful that we must bring in products to cement Kia’s EV leadership position in the local motorist’s mind, but it will not make that impact as a niche passion project. People must not only desire the product, it must also be attainable.”
