All-new Lexus LX teased as premium Land Cruiser 300-based SUV

The first official teaser of the Lexus LX has been released. The image portrays an American-spec model donning the LX600 badge and a light bar that stretches across the rear hatch. Not much else is revealed about the brand’s flagship SUV.

We do get a quick snippet of the upcoming Lexus LX trotting about through a dusty mountain pass. Again, not much is show here other than a gritty alloy wheel and a portion of the front left fender that shows us a series of intricate lines along the side and bonnet. From here we can also notice chrome trimming that runs along the lower part of the window.

The official reveal of the Lexus LX was supposed to happen sooner but due to the semiconductor shortage, the premium SUV was slightly delayed. It’s been reported that a new LX750h model will introduced to the range. A recent report suggested that this will be powered by a hybrid version of the 3,5-litre twin-turbo V6 engine found in the new LC 300, and which – incidentally – was a Lexus motor to start with. Assisted by an electric motor, the Lexus LX will reportedly offer outputs of around 358 kW and 870 N.m, which is 53 kW and 221 N.m more than what you get in the non-hybrid Toyota version.

Land Cruiser 300’s larney cousin coming: 2022 Lexus LX to debut next week

With the new Toyota Land Cruiser 300 having made its debut earlier this year, the focus now turns to its larnier Lexus LX cousin. The Japanese premium brand has announced that the new-generation LX will make its world debut on Wednesday 13 October at 6:30pm.

While we’ll have to wait until then to see how radical Lexus has gone with its signature ‘spindle’ grille, we do get an early glance at the rear end thanks to the teaser image that you see here. Like the new Lexus NX that was revealed earlier this year, the LX has a full-length rear lighting design that stretches across the tailgate.

All the other important information is under wraps for now, but the rumour mill is in full swing regarding its powertrain options. Some have suggested that the Lexus LX will inherit the 305kW 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 from the LC300, however Cochespias - citing leaked documentation - reports that a new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is on the cards for the sake of differentiating the more premium offering. Either way, we do know that the petrol variant will wear the LX600 badge as we see this in the teaser image.

On the diesel front, Lexus has reportedly filed a trademark application for the LX500d badge, Drive reports, which suggests that the new 3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel engine is also in the running for some markets - remember that Lexus badging no longer coincides with engine size as is the case with its German rivals.

When Toyota discontinued the Land Cruiser in the United States for the 2022 model year, many decried the loss of Toyota’s top-shelf SUV. Its Lexus cousin, however, won’t be leaving us so soon — instead, we’re getting a brand new version of the flagship family hauler.

The updated LX is expected to share the global 300-series Land Cruiser’s GA-F platform, which Toyota claims resulted in 440 lbs of weight savings on the Cruiser. Numbers may vary given the Lexus’s luxury appointments, but don’t be surprised if the new LX comes down a weight class from the outgoing model.

The LX 600 is also expected to share the new Cruiser’s twin-turbo V6, making 409 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. With 3.5 liters of displacement, it’s unclear what (if anything) the 600 in the SUV’s name now means. Power, in kilowatts, doubled? Torque, in newton-meters, rounded to the nearest 100?

The new LX, like the outgoing model, is expected to compete with comically large body-on-frame SUVs like the Lincoln Navigator, Cadillac Escalade, and Infiniti QX80. The Lexus’s turbocharged engine may be aiming for a leg up on the segment’s historically dismal fuel economy, but time (and EPA test cycles) will tell if it’s effective.

The 2022 Lexus LX 600 Brings The Ultra-Luxe Land Cruiser Into The Modern Era

A massively punched-up interior, new twin-turbo V6 powertrain and that grille headline the big changes.

Much will be made of the grille on the 2022 Lexus LX 600, our upmarket version of the new Land Cruiser that Toyota isn’t bringing stateside. It’s big, but then so are the grilles on a lot of recent models. It’s not so much the size of the grille that commands attention but the many horizontal lines that comprise it. This thing is like a seven-blade electric trimmer. If I saw one in my rearview mirror, my vision might go blurry. That’s sort of happening as I gaze at the image above in this very moment.

But the LX 600 is more than a face — it’s a Land Cruiser 300 deep down, which has proven to be a pretty popular new SUV. It rides on the same GA-F platform as the new Tundra, which Lexus quotes as saving a whopping 441 pounds compared to the last-gen underpinnings, despite a 20-percent increase to rigidity. A 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 delivering 409 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque handily bests the 383 HP and 403 lb-ft of the 5.7-liter naturally-aspirated V8 under the hood of the outgoing model.

The LX 600 might look glitzier than the Land Cruiser it shares so much with, but it’s still built with the same off-road chops. A quicker-adjusting three-position adaptive height suspension raises and lowers the LX 600 depending on the active Multi-Terrain Select mode. The 25-degree approach and 20-degree departure angles are unchanged from the previous LX, and suspension travel remains long at 3.93 inches bound, 5.7 inches rebound. That’s six-tenths of an inch longer for the rebound.

The all-new Lexus LX has been revealed as a continuation of the flagship SUV which borrows its structure from the Toyota Land Cruiser 300. The premium Japanese brand says this SUV aims to provide an exceptional driving experience and expand its customers’ diverse life experiences.

The new Lexus LX maintains a traditional body-on-frame structure to ensure reliability, durability and driving performance. It renews its characteristics by adopting the new GA-F platform which allows for a weight reduction of approximately 200 kg. It also achieves a digitally-developed high-rigidity body.

The Lexus LX is powered by a twin-turbopetrol 3,5-litre V6 engine that delivers 305 kW and 650 N.m of torque. This is transferred to a 4×4 system via a 10-speed automatic transmission.

To achieve both a high level of off-road driving performance and on-road handling stability, the front features a high-mounted double wishbone suspension. In the rear, the trailing-link axle-type suspension has been inherited from the previous model, while the suspension arms and shock absorber layout and characteristics have been refined to facilitate control of axle movement.

Lexus LX600: A more luxurious ‘Cruiser

Want a Land Cruiser 300, but with fewer seats and a bigger grille? No problem.

There is now an alternative if Toyota’s Land Cruiser 300 isn’t quite luxurious enough for your adventure travel needs.

The Land Cruiser 300’s Lexus twin has been revealed; it utilises the same platform and powertrain, but offers a bit more in the way of creature comforts inside.

Toyota’s Lexus LX600 adds a typically enormous grille to the front of Toyota’s G-AF platform. You are looking at the world’s most luxuriously appointed and spacious ladder-frame 4×4, with real off-road ability.

Although the Lexus LX600 is primarily marketed at American customers, who don’t have option on the Land Cruiser 300, it could also curry favour in South Africa.

The previous LX570 was quite a unique offering, combing the proven Land Cruiser 200 platform with a potent naturally-aspirated petrol V8. This gave it a much swifter turn of speed than any Land Cruiser 4.5-litre turbodiesel V8.

With the LX600, there is only one engine choice at launch: the 3.5-litre turbocharged V6 petrol, which also features in the Land Cruiser 300. So why would you buy into the Lexus interpretation of Land Cruiser? Cabin comfort.

Infotainment is relayed via a stacked dual-touchscreen configuration, measuring 12.3-inch at the top and 7-inches below. The bigger screen is where you experience all the satnav and audio interfacing, with the smaller screen for HVAC information and off-road data.

The new-generation Lexus LX has been revealed abroad, and as expected, it takes the bare bones of the Land Cruiser 300 but adds even more in the way of glamour and luxury - and here we’re talking of a limo-like interior.

The new Lexus LX is set to hit South African showrooms during the first quarter of 2022, with pricing and final specifications to be announced closer to the time.

Although some had expected the new LX to debut a new twin-turbo V8 engine, the only engines that Lexus mentions for now are the familiar 3.5-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol and 3.3-litre V6 twin-turbo diesel motors that are also found in the new LC300. The petrol V6 in the LX 600 produces 305kW and 650Nm, while the diesel found in the LX 500d is good for 220kW and 700Nm.

Being LC300-based, the new Lexus LX is built around the company’s new GA-F modular architecture for body-on-frame vehicles. This has helped shave around 200kg off the curb weight.

Also aiding the weight-saving mission is a new Active Height Control suspension, which comes with an expanded selection of ride height positions. The system also now stabilises the vehicle’s posture during cornering, acceleration and deceleration.

Remember the all-new Toyota Land Cruiser 300 that launched earlier this year? Well, time to meet its posh step-sibling that was sent to private school – the new Lexus LX600.

And would you look at that face. Here we were thinking BMW designers were about to snatch the award for largest automotive snout of the 21st century. Lexus says the LX “pursues a blend of athletic performance, accessible functionality and striking beauty” and that the grille is “a three-dimensional shape comprised of seven sets of floating bars that create a seamless and frame-free structure". Sure, why not.

Anyway, like the new Land Cruiser 300, the LX won’t be sold in the UK. Unlike its Toyota relation, though, it will land on US soil in early 2022. It’s based on the same new GA-F platform as the Land Cruiser too, which means it’s 20 per cent stiffer than the previous gen LX but 200kg lighter. It is still a body-on-frame build, mind.

It also deploys the same 409bhp 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine and 10spd automatic gearbox as the Toyota, but it’s the interior (as well as that grille) where the differences are most striking. In the new and confidently titled Ultra Luxury trim, Lexus has gone for a four-seat layout with proper reclining armchairs in the back. Nice.

You also get many, many screens including two separate touchscreens up front for the infotainment. The upper is a 12.3-inch unit while the one just below measures 7-inches. That’s a whole lot of screen.

Lexus South Africa says it will disclose exact local specifications and pricing closer to the time of the South African introduction in the first quarter of 2022. However, as revealed at last night's function, the vehicle comes with two engine choices and a raft of gizmos and gadgets that will, arguably, please even the most discerning customers.
