Keen on the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 but want even more luxury and a posher badge? Well, the new Lexus LX has finally arrived in South Africa, though the Japanese firm’s local division warns it is still experiencing “acute supply constraints”.
Whereas the outgoing LX line-up comprised just two derivatives (the 450d at R1 968 600 and the 570 at R2 040 200), the box-fresh J310-generation range features as many as five variants (including, for the first time on the LX, a raft of F Sport models), with pricing starting at R2 206 600 and running through to R2 627 500.
Engine options mirror those of the Land Cruiser 300, which means oil-burning duties are taken care of by a 3.3-litre turbodiesel V6 delivering 225 kW and 700 Nm to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. The petrol-fed 3.5-litre V6, meanwhile, generates 305 kW and 650 Nm. Both top out at 210 km/h, though the diesel sips at a claimed 8.3 L/100 km compared with the petrol’s listed figure of 11.3.

Lexus has announced pricing and opened the order books for its all-new LX 500 and LX 600 flagship SUV models.
While customers can now place orders at their nearest dealer, Lexus isn’t saying exactly when they’ll be able to get hold of one as, like most brands, the company is experiencing “acute supply constraints”.
The Lexus LX is based on the new-generation Toyota Land Cruiser 300, but lures its more upscale clients with a bolder design and more luxurious interior. As with the LC300, buyers can choose between petrol and diesel engines, within a five model range that starts just north of R2.2-million.

Different as they are, new Lexus NX and LX both elevate the brand’s SUV game
Lexus recently gave us an opportunity to get behind the wheel of their new NX and LX models and as we’ve come to expect from the luxury brand, it’s all rather top notch.
The two models are on opposite ends of the scale and are a bit of a David and Goliath but provide owners a very pleasant driving experience each in its own way.
Both models have new engines under the bonnet and in the case of the LX the well-known 5.7-litre V8 has been replaced with twin turbocharged motors, one a petrol and the other a diesel, both producing more power than the mill they replace, and paired to a new 10-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission fitted with a new torque converter with a multi-plate lock-up clutch..

REVIEW: Large and in charge Lexus LX is big on presence, luxury and capability
As you would expect it comes with every available passive and active safety feature to keep you safe when things go awry but I did find that the lane keep assist function was very sensitive and couldn’t find a way to deactivate it.
Consumption for buyers won’t be top of mind but we averaged 9.3l/100km which considering its size and shape isn’t bad at all.
The Lexus LX 500d carries its flagship status with aplomb. And while it’s not for everyone, even if you can afford it, there’s no denying its road presence, luxury and overall refinement.

The 2023 Lexus LX Is A Luxurious Vault
If you want off-road capability with your luxury and you don't want a Mercedes-Benz G-Class or a Range Rover, the LX is your answer.
Verdict
If you decide to pull the trigger on an LX, you can’t go wrong. You’ll have a super luxurious, capable, and damn near bulletproof ride that’ll last for years. Plus since Lexus has been selling less than 10,000 LXs a year for over 20 years now, there’s an exclusivity with it as you won’t see them all the time. My advice would be to skip the Ultra Luxury Package; the LS can do the luxury limo thing better. But you can’t pick a better way to travel the boulevard or the off road trail than a Lexus LX.
