The all new WRX has been announced./

2022 Subaru WRX brings new platform, keeps boxer and manual

Rally-honed hero is back for 2022 with all-new mechanicals and a rugged overhaul, but no UK sale planned

The rally-honed Subaru WRX has been reborn for 2022 with a new platform, overhauled interior and heavily upgraded chassis – but it still uses a turbocharged boxer engine and offers a manual gearbox.

The fifth-generation WRX, which has been marketed separately from the Impreza on which it is based since 2015, arrives three years after its predecessor was pulled from the UK. And, like its closely related BRZ sibling, it will not be sold in the UK. Subaru’s UK managing director, John Hurtig, told Autocar last year this decision was taken to allow the brand to focus on its more mainstream SUV line-up.

“[The WRX] was a performance car, a rally car,” Hurtig said. “It was a good era in UK. But it’s history. It’s a long time ago now. It has nothing really to do with the Subaru brand as it is today.”

Power comes from Subaru’s new 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine – a format used by every WRX since the Mk1 of 1992. Here, it pumps 271bhp and 258lb ft (43bhp and 74lb ft more than the naturally aspirated unit in the BRZ). Power goes to both axles via a six-speed manual gearbox or a new automatic Subaru Performance Transmission (SPT) said to offer 30% faster upshifts and 50% faster downshifts.

The torque curve has been broadened to give peak output from 2000rpm to 5200rpm and Subaru claims the extra 400cc of displacement – along with a new electronically controlled turbo wastegate and bypass valves – improves the throttle response.

One of the most significant evolutions for the WRX is the switch to Subaru’s new Global Platform, shared with the Outback estate and Forester crossover. This is claimed to bring “a substantial upgrade in ride and handling performance”, with increased chassis stiffness and a lower centre of gravity. It’s said to have 28% more torsional rigidity than the previous chassis and the rear stabiliser bar is now mounted directly to the body (rather than the subframe) for flatter cornering performance.

2022 Subaru WRX: New Platform, Bigger Engine, and 271 HP

We need to talk about that plastic cladding, though.

After a bit of a delay, the all-new 2022 Subaru WRX is finally here. Featuring a bigger engine, new styling, some crossover-style fender cladding, and—get this—an honest-to-god, new chassis, Subaru's fifth-generation rally sedan aims to do what the new BRZ already did: improve on its predecessor’s strengths in every way. And based on the specs, things look promising. Mostly.

To start, Subaru has ditched the old 2.0-liter and fitted a bigger 2.4-liter turbo flat-four under the hood. Despite this relatively significant increase in displacement, power is up just three horsepower over last year. It makes 271 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm while torque goes completely unchanged at 258 pound-feet from 2,000 to 5,200 rpm, although Subaru says the torque curve is broader this time around.

Sitting between the boxer engine and the standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system with Active Torque Vectoring is your choice of a reworked six-speed manual or a CVT, which Subaru calls a “quick-shifting,” “eight-speed” automatic transmission with paddles. Hm.

And despite a front-end design that could easily pass as a facelift for the outgoing WRX, this 2022 model isn't one of those "all-new" models that's actually a heavily reskinned version of its predecessor. Underpinning all of that freshened bodywork is the Subaru Global Platform that boasts 28 percent better torsional rigidity, suspension mounting point rigidity that's up 75 percent, and a lower center of gravity while providing a generally better ride and handling.

Sheez that is an insanely broad torque RPM band! The engine will kinda pull like an electric car! Must be some fancy turbo charger trickery going on.

Subaru WRX

Subaru of America introduced the all-new 2022 WRX with the most advanced features, design, and performance in its nearly 20-year history. The fifth-generation rally icon is powered by a new 271 hp 2.4-liter turbocharged Subaru BOXER® engine that is paired with either a 6-speed manual transmission or new automatic transmission. With available high-definition tablet-style 11.6-inch SUBARU STARLINK® Multimedia system and latest generation EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, the 2022 WRX delivers greater performance, technology, and safety than ever before.

Also new for 2022, the Subaru WRX adds a new top-of-the-line GT trim with a new automatic transmission, the Subaru Performance Transmission, as standard. The new WRX GT offers a first-ever for WRX, new electronically controlled dampers that can tailor the dynamic performance to the driver's preferences with Comfort, Normal, and Sport settings. The Drive Mode Select also offers additional options to configure steering feel, damper settings, SI-Drive settings, and more, with up to 430 different customization options.

For the first time, the WRX is built on the Subaru Global Platform, which offers increased safety, improved dynamics, and reductions in noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). The 2022 WRX will be available at Subaru retailers in early 2022.

SA-bound 2022 Subaru WRX unveiled as crossover performance sedan

The all-new 2022 Subaru WRX has been revealed as an ode to the manufacturer’s history of racing off the tarmac. The new model boasts a crossover-inspired design while maintaining the core principles of a performance sedan with a new drivetrain setup.

The fifth-generation Subaru WRX adopts a new turbocharged 2,4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine which delivers 202 kW and 350 N.m of torque. This is sent to the Symmetrical all-wheel drive system via a six-speed manual gearbox or a brand new automatic transmission. The manual gearbox has been fitted with optimised gear ratios to provide a more refined and improved shift quality whereas the new auto offers up to 30 per cent faster upshifts in second to third and 50 per cent faster downshifts from third to second.

The all-new Subaru WRX will be coming to South Africa in the first quarter of 2022 with pricing to be confirmed closer to the time.

Nothing will beat the simple straight lines of the 2000's era, hawkeye 2.5 , but that looks really nice imo, if a tad busy...
EDIT: okay wait this looks a bit meh, black wheel arch trim is ****:

The 2022 Subaru WRX Is A Sport Sedan That Looks Like A Crossover

The spiritual successor to the Legacy Outback Sport Utility Sedan has arrived.

Subaru is known for two things in the U.S.: SUVs with a flair for adventure, and the WRX. SUV fans like their SUVs, and WRX fans sure as hell like their vape pe- er, WRXs. With the 2022 WRX, which is truly all-new for the first time in a very long time, the company has seemingly tried to design a vehicle that appeals to both camps.

That’s what all the black cladding, hexagonal wheel arch surrounds and the Crosstrek-aping orange paint are saying to me, anyway. But it’d be an injustice to reduce the new WRX to its appearance, because there’s so much more to discuss under the hood.

First, there’s the new engine: a 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four producing 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It comes with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic which is actually a CVT, though Subaru would prefer you didn’t call it that. In fact, the company has a hip new name for this CVT, having dubbed it the Subaru Performance Transmission (no, really). It’s got paddle shifters, and the company claimschanges between the simulated second and third gears are quicker than ever.

But enough about the transmission you probably don’t want. The new WRX’s other big upgrade pertains to its chassis, which has switched to the Subaru Global Platform and, in doing so, has become considerably stiffer. Torsional rigidity has increased by 28 percent, while suspension mounting point rigidity is up 75 percent, according to the manufacturer’s data. As with the new BRZ, the rear stabilizer bar now connects directly to the body, not the subframe. Everything’s tighter, snappier, more immediate — you know the deal.
