2023 BMW X1 & iX1 (3rd Generation)

BMW X1 M35i

A performance model with unmistakable M character is taking its place at the top of the new BMW X1 range. The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive builds on the spontaneous driving pleasure that lies at the heart of the compact Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) concept with an injection of the dynamism, agility and precision for which M models are renowned. Its four-cylinder unit is part of the new modular generation of BMW Group Efficient Dynamics engines and uses M TwinPower Turbo technology to record maximum output of 221 kW/300 hp in Europe and an even higher figure of 233 kW/317 hp in the USA and other selected markets.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive races to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in 5.4 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). M-specific chassis technology - including the option of M Compound brakes for the first time on a performance model - teams up with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive to deliver sublime performance characteristics. The sharper character of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is clearly apparent both inside and out. The new range-topping model comes with the type of exclusive design and equipment features originally reserved for high-performance cars from BMW M GmbH. These include the two pairs of exhaust tailpipes and the optional M Sport seats with illuminated M logo.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive also blazes a trail when it comes to digital technology: it is among the first models to feature the new BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9. The market launch of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive will get underway in October 2023 in the USA. Deliveries in Europe will commence in November 2023. The flagship model will be built at BMW Group Plant Regensburg, together with all other variants of the new BMW X1, including the all-electric BMW iX1.

BMW X1 xDrive30e PHEV (2023) Price & Specs

Despite BMW earlier stating the X1 xDrive30e was not destined for South Africa, this 240 kW plug-in variant has quietly joined the local line-up as SA’s most affordable PHEV…

When the wraps came off the U11-generation BMW X1 range in mid-2022, the German firm said the X1 xDrive30e PHEV would “not be offered in South Africa”. However, the company appears to have done an abrupt about-turn as this dual-powered derivative has now quietly joined the local line-up.

Yes, the plug-in hybrid version slots in above the purely petrol- and diesel-powered X1 variants, priced from R1 050 000 in standard xLine trim and R1 090 000 in optional M Sport guise. That makes it the most affordable PHEV on the local market. Of course, the newcomer is not to be confused with the fully electric iX1 xDrive30e, which kicks off at R1 205 000. As a result, the X1 range now includes petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and fully electric offerings.

So, what do we know about the X1 xDrive30e’s plug-in powertrain? Well, it comprises the Munich-based automaker’s familiar turbocharged 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder petrol mill along with a “highly integrated” electric drive unit and a 16.3 kWh (14.2 kWh net) lithium-ion battery pack. The petrol motor generates 110 kW/240 Nm and drives the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the 130 kW/247 Nm electric motor powers the rear axle.

How much does the BMW X1 xDrive30e PHEV cost in SA?

BMW X1 xDrive30e xLine – R1 050 000

BMW X1 xDrive30e M Sport – R1 090 000

The price above includes a 5-year/100 000 km Motorplan (though BMW Group SA says buyers can “elect to opt out” of this arrangement at the point of vehicle purchase).

BMW and Stadel Museum team up to create a one-off BMW iX1

Following its tradition of creating vehicular art works, BMW joined efforts with the Stadel Museum, one of Germany's oldest art institutions. But don’t expect your typical corporate sponsorship, oh no, this is something far more curious.

Marc Brandenburg, an artist known for his let’s say ‘distinctive style’, was given the task of spicing up a BMW iX1. While initially we all may be thinking getting an artist to re-design a vehicle is a little bit out there, it’s not the first time BMW has done it. According to the company, it is all about pushing boundaries of what we consider to be art.

Brandenburg, a Berlin native who spent his formative years in the US before returning to his homeland, is no stranger to the unconventional. According to the official press release, his drawings have always been about challenging norms and exploring new perspectives - we’re not art critics by any stretch of imagination, but this sounds a lot like someone trying to explain a canvas covered in colorful blobs of paint. And what better canvas to do that on than a BMW iX1?

BMW iX1 eDrive20

BMW is consistently continuing its model offensive in the field of e-mobility and has presented another all-electric variant of the new Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) in the premium compact segment. The BMW iX1 eDrive20 enables a particularly attractive and at the same time economical entry into the world of premium electric mobility. The second all-electric model variant of the compact SAV is powered by an electric motor with a maximum output of 150 kW/204 hp (with temporary boost) and has a range of 430 to 475 kilometres (provisional values according to WLTP).

By expanding its range in the premium compact segment, the BMW Group is opening up locally emission-free driving pleasure to broad target groups and thus providing additional impetus for the ramp-up of e-mobility. The new BMW iX1 eDrive20 will be available from the start of production in November 2023 at a recommended retail price of 47,900 euros (incl. VAT). Like the BMW iX1 xDrive30 it is manufactured at the BMW Group plant in Regensburg.

Highly efficient electric drive, state-of-the-art charging technology, excellent range

As in all of the brand's current electric vehicles, the new BMW iX1 eDrive20 also uses the current fifth generation BMW eDrive technology. A highly integrated drive unit on the front axle of the new entry-level model generates an instantaneously available maximum torque of 247 Nm in addition to the maximum output of 150 kW/204 hp. The compact SAV accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 170 km/h.

BMW unveils its cheapest electric SUV yet - iX1 eDrive20

BMW has good news for those still on the fence and worried about high prices for the new electric SUVs. The new BMW iX1 eDrive20 is here to fix this - with a less powerful drivetrain, and most importantly - a lower price. Oh, and technically it’s not an SUV - this compact Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) promises not just an eco-friendly ride but a premium one at that.

Price? €47,900. And for this investment, what do you get? An electric range that will take you between 430 km and 475 km on a full charge, based on the WLTP standard. Quite decent, if you ask us. A single electric motor powering front wheels with a maximum output of 150 kW (204 horsepower). That’s enough power to get you from 0 to 100 km/h in a brisk 8.6 seconds. Brisk is sufficient in most life situations.

The battery, with its usable energy content of 64.7 kWh, is on the smaller side of things. Thankfully, when life gets busy (as it inevitably does), the vehicle offers multiple charging options. The standard AC charging at 11 kW will get your battery from empty to full in 6.5 hours. If you're a bit more impatient, opt for the optional three-phase AC charging at 22 kW, and you can cut that time down to just 3 hours and 45 minutes. The rapid charging option at 130 kW can get your battery from 10% to 80% in just 29 minutes. Here’s that word again - brisk.
