Morgan Super 3

The Morgan Motor Company unveiled Super 3, one of the most intriguing and distinctive vehicles the company has ever built. Super 3 has been designed from the ground up to offer new levels of character, thrill and adventure, principles that have defined Morgan's three-wheeled product since the company was founded 113 years ago.

At the very heart of Morgan Super 3's personality is its driving character. Primarily, a three-wheeled Morgan is a vehicle that entices you to get behind the wheel, offering a unique combination of mechanical feel, connection to the environment and visual differentiation from anything else on the road. Few vehicles will engage their occupants like Super 3, which encourages owners to feel present in the craft of motoring and entices them to embark on incredible adventures.

As the company's most configurable model to date, Super 3 offers an extensive list of options and accessories that allow owners to tailor their own experience. From adventure touring accessories to race-inspired liveries, Super 3 adopts multiple personalities to reflect the individuality of its owner. Three expressions of these personalities can be seen on the launch vehicles.

Like every Morgan, Super 3 will be built in Malvern, Worcestershire, at the company's Pickersleigh Road factory. Skilled craftsmen and women have been handcrafting cars in these hallowed red brick buildings since 1914, just five years after HFS Morgan invented the first Morgan, known as 'The Runabout'.

Morgan’s new three-wheeler is this glorious Ford-engined Super 3

The 118bhp Super 3 continues a 113-year legacy of three-wheeled Morgans

It may not seem it at first glance, but the all-new Super 3 is a fantastically modern Morgan. Yes, the tri-wheeled configuration harks back to Morgan’s beginnings in the 1900s, but this is the first clean-sheet Morgan design since the Aero 8 in 2000, the first Morgan to be built with a monocoque structure (using the company’s new aluminium platform) and a radical diversion in three-wheeler strategy with an inboard engine that has more than two cylinders.

We’ll get onto that engine in a bit. First though, just look at it. It’s recognisably Morgan and still pleasingly retro, but the Malvern-based firm says that this time around it took influences from the jet age. Super streamlined, isn’t it? Plus, from head-on those side-mounted cooling packs (Morgan brilliantly refers to them as sideblades) look like they’ve come straight off a modern-day F-35 Lightning. They house radiators up front and then stretch back past the front wheels to be decked out with panniers, luggage racks or graphics.

There’s no longer a V-twin engine on full display up front, so the face is comprised of those lovely round headlamps, a signature horseshoe front grill and pull-rod suspension that’s mounted to a cast aluminium structure known as the Hartland Strut – named after the Morgan engineer that designed it. How very wholesome.

The front wheels are aero-spec, Morgan-designed units shod in bespoke Avon Speedmaster tyres with ballooned sidewalls. The suspension wishbones are as long as possible to improve stability, and like with the previous generation 3 Wheeler, the insides of the front wheels are closed off for better aero and refinement.

New 2022 Morgan Super 3 brings jet-age design and Ford power

Reborn 3 Wheeler majors on practicality and personalisation, and is set to be Morgan's best-seller

Morgan is returning to the start of its 113-year history to inspire an all-new £40,000 three-wheeler model, the Super 3, which it believes will lift vehicle production at Malvern to unprecedented levels and give the marque a bigger global presence than ever when it hits the market in August.

The new model, Morgan’s first “clean sheet” design since the Aero 8 in 2000, is a new take on the traditional 3 Wheeler that company founder HFS Morgan first started selling in 1909. It ditches the motorcycle-derived V-twin engine that has been a recurring theme in Morgan 3 wheeler history in favour of a front-mounted 1.5-litre Ford in-line triple, a normally aspirated 118bhp version of the engine that powers the Ford Fiesta ST.

Unlike any previous 3 wheeler, the Super 3’s engine is carried on an extremely rigid but lightweight frontal casting that joins a new, CAD-designed, monocoque chassis, most of whose lightweight aluminium panels are Superformed in nearby Worcester. There is a similar but smaller joining casting at the rear of the body: both elements are described as “unashamedly functional” pieces that also contribute to the car’s visual character.

Exclusive Q&A: How Morgan reinvented the 3 Wheeler

Jonathan Wells tells us how Morgan has adapted one of its oldest designs for 2022

The new Super 3 is one of Morgan's most important new models in recent years, ushering in a totally new design language, unprecedented levels of personalisation and – potentially – significantly enhanced global sales potential.

Among the most significant modifications are the switch from a front-mounted V-twin motor to an inboard Ford triple and the adoption of modern-spec interior technology, changes that will help the Super 3 to appeal to both new buyers and traditionalists.

We caught up with Morgan's head of design Jonathan Wells to find out how the fan-favourite three-wheeler made it from sketchpad to showroom:

New Morgan Super 3 Is 'Modernizing' The Three Wheeler

Gone is the Harley-Davidson sourced V-Twin engine, in its place is a 1.5 liter Ford three cylinder

It’s here and it’s spectacular.

Morgan has pulled the covers off their latest vehicle – the Super 3, and damn does it look sick.

The new three wheeled car may not look drastically different from the outgoing 3-Wheeler, but there are some big changes under the skin.

We’ll start with the chassis. This is actually Morgan’s first ever monocoque chassis, and this is where I have a bit of bad news for Morgan pursuits. There’s no ash wood in the frame, which was a staple of Morgans of old.

Step “inside” the new Super 3 and you’re greeted with niceties like center-mounted digital gauges and even optional navigation – again both firsts from the small British manufacturer. The leather-clad seats and dashboard do remain in the new Super 3.

Something else that remains is the Mazda Miata-sourced five-speed gearbox. Perhaps the biggest departure from the old car is the powerplant. Gone is the 2.0-liter V-twin Harley Davidson engine slug out in front of the body work. In its place is a three-cylinder Ford engine that is actually enclosed under the bodywork. Three cylinders, three wheels, Super 3.

Power also gets big increases over the outgoing model. The new 1.5-liter engine produces 118 horsepower and 6,500 rpm and 110 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. That’s a healthy bump over the V-twin’s 82 horsepower and 105 lb-ft of torque.
