New Volvo EX90 Revealed as Flagship Electric SUV

The new Volvo EX90 all-electric flagship SUV has finally been unwrapped, billed as the start of a new era for the Swedish firm and the safest Volvo yet…

Volvo, which aims to be a fully electric brand by 2030, has whipped the covers off its new battery-powered EX90 flagship SUV in Stockholm.

Effectively arriving as the successor to the XC90 (though the latter will likely continue alongside the newcomer for a while yet), the 7-seater EX90 is described as the safest Volvo yet and the “start of a new era” for the company. Production will start in the United States in 2023 before also expanding to China.

The new EX90 is the third fully electric Volvo following the launch of the XC40 Recharge variants and the standalone C40 Recharge. The Swedish automaker says it plans to reveal “one new fully electric car each year” as it moves towards its 2030 goal. Furthermore, it has an ambition to be a climate-neutral company by 2040.

Following EX90 announcement Volvo teases its next electric SUV

Yesterday’s launch of Volvo’s electric flagship was a big event. There was a lot to take in, tons of new information, details of the gorgeous all-electric EX90 and the unveiling itself was quite long. And there was an Easter egg at the very end - starting right at the 1:05:40 mark.

Did you see it? Yes, Volvo just showed another future electric SUV standing right next to the EX90. Clearly a bit shorter but nearly the same height - is this the new EX60? The rear lights follow a similar pattern, although the top part seems to be in the C-pillar rather than embedded in the glass as it is in the EX90.

The shape suggests Volvo will ensure family resemblance with only few design details differentiating between smaller and bigger models. Smaller means lighter - it means more fun to drive and hopefully even longer range or at least the same range but with smaller battery.

The 2024 Volvo EX90 Has the Handiest Cargo Chart Built Into the Tailgate

This delightful Easter egg tells you how much trunk room you've got, in inches and meters, plus icons to show you what you can fit.

Modern Volvos are known for having great interiors, combining minimalist design with fancy little surprises, like crystal gear shifters or embroidered Swedish flags. So when Volvo unveiled the new EX90 electric SUV in Stockholm on Wednesday, I was stoked to see a familiar level of attention to detail. But I wasn’t expecting to find a handy-dandy measurement chart in the cargo area.

When you open the EX90’s liftgate – electronically, natch – there’s a diagram embossed above the rear window that lists various measurements of the SUV’s cargo quarters. In both inches and meters, Volvo writes out the length of the load floor behind each row of seats, with a bonus measurement for when the front passenger seat is pushed all the way forward, and details the width and height of the cargo hold, too. That’ll be super helpful for knowing if you can fit that sweet new Lommarp bookcase in your EX90 before you waste precious electric range driving to Ikea.

Volvo and Polestar Will Finally Start Designing Their Cars Separately

The two companies have designed most of their vehicles side-by-side since Polestar was launched. That all changes from here.

If your first thought upon seeing the new 2024 Volvo EX90 wasn’t, “Holy ****, lidar!” it was probably something like, “Hang on, didn’t I see this already?” The EX90 shares its platform and powertrain with the Polestar 3, the electric SUV that Volvo’s spinoff brand debuted in October. But beyond the mechanical bits, the two Swedes look similar — too similar, perhaps. Thankfully, according to Volvo’s design chief, this Polestar parity won’t be around much longer.

“We’ve split the studio,” Robin Page, Volvo’s head of design and user experience, told members of the media during the EX90's debutante ball in Stockholm this week. “The Polestar team are [now] in a separate building.”

Why the breakup? It all comes down to the law. Page said that, following Polestar’s IPO, the two companies “legally” needed to separate their design teams. “We worked in the same studio for Polestar 1, 2 and 3,” Page said. “With Polestar 3 we started to grow the Polestar design team, but after the IPO is when we split them.”

A quick refresher: The Polestar 1 was essentially a road-going version of the absolutely gorgeous 2013 Volvo Coupe concept, and the Polestar 2 is basically a production version of the Volvo 40.2 concept from 2016. That the Volvo EX90 and Polestar 3 are so closely related is hardly a shock based on this history.

Will things change going forward? “Yeah, absolutely,” Page said. “Both brands have very strong design identities [and] we can easily split our design languages.” Even for these new SUVs, Page points out that the Polestar is a five-seater and the EX90 can seat seven. “It’s not like we’re doing the same proportions.”

Small electric Volvo SUV to be called EX30

Volvo did unveil its flagship EX90 only last month and during that event the company managed to hide an Easter Egg in its presentation. There was a small SUV sitting right next to its bigger sibling. Now the fever around the EX90 is subsiding, the world’s attention has turned towards the next electric Volvo.

The company did confirm at the time that the next car will be much smaller, it still is going to be an SUV but more compact and far more affordable - whatever that may mean. The EX90 is an electric replacement of the XC90 and it was expected the smaller car will replace the XC40 and will be called EX40.

Jim Rowan, the CEO of Volvo, in a recent conversation with Automotive News Europe, referred to the small SUV as the EX30. He confirmed the car will be manufactured in China but it will be launched in global markets. The decision which plant it will be manufactured at hasn’t yet been taken - it will be either Chengdu, Daqing or Taizhou since Geely has a rather extensive manufacturing base in China.

The EX30 will be a smaller car than the current XC40 and will be available with different sizes of battery packs. This change in naming nomenclature signals that Violvo will attempt to have 4 electric models - EX30 will be the smallest and will be followed most likely by EX50 and then EX70 with the EX90 being the flagship.

Volvo’s CEO made an interesting comment during his interview, he mentioned that he doesn’t see interchangeable battery packs as an advantage. He considers them more as a safety risk and he refers to the constant attaching and detaching of the battery as a potential safety issue. It is fair to say we won’t be seeing Volvo with swappable batteries any time soon.

Volvo EX90 to feature Bose sound system

Volvo's upcoming EX90 electric SUV is expected to hit the roads in early 2024, but the company is busy promoting it and revealing more details along the way. An advanced Bose sound system is the latest addition to the long list of features.

The EX90 is positioned in the premium segment, so a premium Bose sound is only fitting. There will be 14 speakers inside the cabin enhanced by the brand's digital signal processing technology called Centerpoint 360. It promises to make the sound much more immersive.

Volvo EX90 version with two-row seating and rear-wheel drive on the way

Last month, Volvo unveiled the EX90 - its electric SUV flagship. Initially that was only supposed to come with three rows and dual motor, but we now hear a cheaper version might be on the way.

Javier Varela, COO and Deputy CEO of Volvo, revealed that it is possible to remove seats from the EX90's platform. He also mentioned that if the company decides to move forward with a single-motor version of the EX90, only the rear wheels would be powered by the motor. And those plans sound a little too specific to be purely speculation by the executive.

On the other side of the spectrum Volvo considers making a performance model of the EX90 that would top the currently available top version (517hp and 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration in 4.9 seconds).
