Volvo’s range-topping new electric car, the EX90, has been previewed ahead of a full reveal on 9 November.

Set to go on sale next year, the electric SUV will be Volvo’s new flagship and the first to sit atop its new SPA2 platform. It will be kitted out with safety technology never before seen on a production vehicle and sold alongside a heavily refreshed version of the current XC90.

New images give little of the car's final design away, but do hint at how important aerodynamic efficiency has been for the design team – Volvo claims a coefficient of 0.29Cd – and confirm that Lidar technology will be standard across the range. Various visible cues, such as the blanked-off grille and C-shaped light clusters, will link the EX90 to the smaller Volvo C40 Recharge and Volvo XC40 Recharge EVs.

Earlier images showed the EX90’s interior is focused on delivering clear information and data to the driver. The firm has done away with ergonomic buttons, with the majority of functions (such as sat-nav, phone data and media) now controlled through the large central touchscreen.

Driver-focused information in the EX90 is displayed on a smaller screen behind the steering wheel, including range, speed and direct navigation instructions.

The Volvo EX90's infotainment system is all about providing "the right information at the right time", the latest teaser by the company reveals. The EX90 is a fully electric successor to the XC90 and the new software is one of the key selling points of the car.

Volvo says that the information displayed on the infotainment screen and the instrument cluster is going to adapt to what you are doing right now. You could be talking to a phone, driving on the highway or reverse parking and the system will provide the most appropriate info.

There's going to be a contextual bar at all times with suggested actions, again depending on your scenario.

Volvo is well-known for its safety focus and this is no exception. Volvo believes that fewer distractions, the better. The system takes care of that by providing you only with essential info while driving.

Volvo EX90's latest teaser tells more about its design

Volvo's fully electric, luxury SUV EX90 is getting announced next Wednesday, November 9, and the company's teaser campaign is going at full speed. Volvo announced that the car would use sustainable materials and more recently, the company showcased the advanced infotainment systemthe EX90 will ship with.

Today's teaser is all about design. The Swedish carmaker shared a couple of images hinting at a familiar design with a few key changes. For instance, the front is more rounded, the handles lie flush with the doors and the rims have a sealed design. All of those changes should reduce overall drag and boost the vehicle's efficiency.

All hail the new Volvo EX90, the electric seven-seat SUV that Volvo insists isn’t just a car, but ‘a highly advanced computer on wheels’

Look carefully and what do you see? Seriously, lean in close and take a good look. Do you see… a car? If so, Volvo thinks you’re wrong. Well, not wrong. But only half right. Because this is the all-new, all-electric EX90.

And while it’s very much a seven-seater SUV, Volvo reckons it’s also ‘a highly advanced computer on wheels’ that marks ‘the start of a new era’ for the Swedish firm. Which is big talk indeed. “The Volvo EX90 is a statement for where we are, and where we are going,” explains CEO Jim Rowan. “Born electric and software-defined, it demonstrates what future Volvo cars will stand for in terms of safety, technology, sustainability, design and creating a more personal experience for every customer.”

So let’s dig into the detail. Volvo is promising one new electric car a year as it targets EV-only sales by 2030; the EX90 is the first, and it’s the flagship. That means better everything, and more of it for good measure.

Enter state-of-the-art cameras, radars and lidar, all hooked up to an NVIDIA DRIVE core computer to form an ‘invisible shield of safety’ around the car. Volvo claims the EX90 can build a real-time, 360-degree picture of the world around it, as well as pick out small obstacles in the road hundreds of metres away. Day or night. At motorway speeds.

It’ll also scout the danger within. Namely you. Sensors and cameras track your gaze to measure alertness behind the wheel. If you get drowsy, it’ll (literally) give you a nudge; if you fall asleep altogether, it’ll stop safely and call for help. Turning nightmares into dreams.

For now you’ll have to make do with an upgraded Pilot Assist and steering ‘support’ while changing lanes, but Volvo says the EX90 is hardware-ready for unsupervised (i.e. autonomous) driving. So a future over-the-air update might one day make that a reality.

New Volvo EX90 brings 360-mile range for £96,255

Electric successor to Volvo XC90 is firm's longest-range EV, and its most expensive car

The new Volvo EX90 seven-seat electric SUV has been unveiled, with new company boss Jim Rowan claiming it will set new standards for safety – and serve as a “statement for where we are, and where we are going”.

Due on sale in 2024, the new machine is effectively an electric-only equivalent to the current Volvo XC90. The EX90 is the third electric Volvo following the Volvo XC40 Recharge and Volov C40 Recharge, but the first to sit on a dedicated electric platform: the Geely Group’s advanced SPA2 architecture. It is closely related technically to the recently revealed Polestar 3, but unlike that model features a third row of seats.

The styling of the machine is based on the Concept Recharge that was shown last year. It retains familiar Volvo design cues, such as the blanked-off grille seen on the XC40 and the upright rear lights. It has also been honed for aerodynamic efficiency to optimise the range: Volvo claims a coefficient of 0.29Cd.

The EX90 will launch with a twin-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain with two levels of output. Twin Motor models will offers 402bhp and 568lb ft of torque, with Performance models offering 510bhp and 671lb ft of torque. Both offer a limited top speed of 112mph. Lower-powered single-motor versions are likely to follow.

All electric Volvo EX90 debuts with 517hp and 600km range

Electric cars are no longer just cars, Volvo made sure of it with its latest all-electric flagship EX90. With all its futuristic safety systems it is probably the safest place on Earth, it looks after passengers, it cleans the air of allergens, it won’t hurt any squirrels thanks to its advanced LiDAR and it can power a house in case of a blackout.

The initially available EX90 version comes with a 111kWh battery pack - in another first for the automotive world, the entire supply and production process and all materials used for the battery are fully traceable. Battery is manufactured using renewable energy and supports up to 250kW DC charging, allowing you to add 180km of range in just 10 minutes. The charge from 10 to 80% takes 30 minutes, while a fully charged battery can travel for up to 600km.

In the performance version two electric motors of the permanent magnet type power all four wheels with a combined 517hp and 910Nm of torque. Volvo has not released the performance figures yet, but you can be sure, the EX90 won’t be a slouch with this much power.

The 600km quoted WLTP range is for the twin-motor 300kW (408hp) version of the car, but Volvo did not provide any more details about this drivetrain option yet.

New Volvo EX90 flagship SUV revealed, and it’s bursting with tech

Following a prolonged teaser campaign, the Volvo EX90 has finally been revealed to the world and it almost goes without saying that the new battery-powered flagship SUV is Volvo’s safest product ever.

But it also breaks new ground for the Swedish brand’s electrification goals, as the first product to be purpose-designed as an electric vehicle. By 2030, all Volvos will be battery powered.

Initially the Volvo EX90 will be available only in a high-performance, twin-motor all-wheel drive format, with 380kW and 910Nm, but the drivetrain choices will no doubt be expanded over time. Feeding the motors is an 111 kWh battery that enables a WLTP claimed range of up to 600km, and Volvo says it can be fast-charged from 10% to 80% in less than half an hour.

But the new Volvo EX90 is more than just a large, powerful and luxurious SUV, it also breaks new technological ground for the brand as Chief Executive Jim Rowan explains:
