The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 1.5 Exceed retails for R499 990 (June 2025). The price includes a 5-year/unlimited km warranty and a 3-year/45 000 km service plan (with intervals of 15 000 km).
Verdict
The Outlander Sport delivers plenty of comfort and refinement, allied with an impressive number of features, at a price that seems almost too good to be true. The weak link is the engine’s lack of punch, but we’d rather have a small crossover with impressive fuel consumption than turbocharged shove.
Should you buy one? Intense competition from new Chinese competitors has obligated legacy car brands to optimise their offerings, and Mitsubishi, with its stellar reputation for reliability, has positioned the Outlander Sport to take the fight to its rivals and beat them at their own game: value for money.
Most new models that we assess at Cars.co.za are more-than-competent offerings, but the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is certainly above par for the segment and pleasantly surprised us in several ways.
There’s an awful lot to like here, including attractive packaging, build quality (again, at the price), refined road manners, comprehensive spec, and admirable practicality – all at a very reasonable price. If you’re shopping in the R500k compact SUV segment, the Outlander Sport deserves to be on your shortlist.

Mitsubishi Destinator Unveiled
The Mitsubishi Destinator has just been revealed, offering 7-seats and turbocharged power. Should it come to South Africa?
The Mitsubishi Destinator has been officially revealed and the Japanese brand has confirmed that it will be sold in Asian markets, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. It is built at Mitsubishi’s plant in Indonesia, the same factory responsible for Outlander Sport, Xpander and so on.
In terms of size, this new 3-row SUV is about the same length as the Toyota RAV4. The seating arrangement can be folded for additional practicality with the second row splitting in a 40:20:40 fashion, and the third offering 50:50 folding.
From the spec sheets, it appears the Destinator is aimed at families with practicality and comes pretty well equipped. Three rows of seating, a panoramic sunroof, 65-colour ambient lighting, 12.3-inch infotainment screen, 8-inch digital instrument cluster, Yamaha audio system, Type A, Type C USB ports for each row to name but a few.

Mitsubishi confirms SA launch date for Destinator SUV
Mitsubishi South Africa has announced the local launch date for the SA-bound Destinator SUV.
Unveiled globally in July 2025, Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA) is gearing up to launch the Destinator on local shores in 2026. The Destinator is manufactured at the Japanese automaker’s Indonesian plant – the same facility where the Outlander Sport, which featured in our 2025 SUV Shootout, and Xpander, one of the most affordable seven-seater passenger cars in SA, are assembled.
“The Destinator is an all-new SUV designed for South African families and explorers alike. With its bold capabilities and versatile design, we are excited to help our customers embark on new journeys, while strengthening our presence in the compact-SUV segment,” said Lerato Nonyane, General Manager of Product and Marketing at MMSA.

MMSA has confirmed the Destinator will launch in SA in March 2026. The local model lineup and specifications will be announced closer to the launch date.
The Destinator employs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 120 kW and 250 N.m of torque, available from 5 000 and 2 000 r/min, respectively. The four-cylinder unit is mated with a CVT (continuously variable transmission), which delivers power exclusively to the front wheels.
