Volvo wants to get you excited about its small SUV, by parking it a long way away

Swedish firm releases a single image of the upcoming EX30 SUV

Back in November last year at the reveal of the large and expensive seven-seat EX90, Volvo boss Jim Rowan said that its upcoming small electric SUV would be aimed at members of Gen Z. Yep, Volvo wants to sell to young people.

And now we have another look at that upcoming EX30 SUV, although for some reason Volvo has parked it a long way away. We've tried to zoom in and brighten it up a bit, but that's the best we can do up there. Enough with the teaser images, let’s see the real thing so that teenagers can decide if they want a Volvo after all.

Apparently we’ll get the full reveal on 7 June, and pre-orders will open in the UK on the very same day. Get those mouse-clicking (or should that be screen-tapping) fingers ready teens, we’re told this is the sort of thing you'll want to buy…

Sneak peek: all-electric Volvo EX30 SUV set to debut June 7

Volvo’s marketing machine just kicked into a higher gear with the looming debut of the smallest electric SUV from the Swedish kings of safety. The long-rumored EX30 is fast approaching and Volvo confirmed the official debut date will be June 7. The company dropped a short video teaser with a snappy tagline attached to it - something small is coming…

Small in size it may well be, but the EX30 is going to be huge for the company. The current XC40 has been recently refreshed from the ground up and now it uses the SEA EV platform from Geely, Volvo’s parent company. The EX30 will slot beneath the XC40 and will become the smallest, and the most affordable Volvo on the market.

Volvo Is About to Launch an EV It Thinks Gen-Z Can Afford

The EX30 is going to be very small, and Volvo is hoping a different sort of ownership model is going to lure in young folks.

New cars have become wildly expensive in recent years, which has left a lot of younger folks in the lurch if they want to buy something new. Well, Volvo seems to have an answer to Gen-Z’s prayers: the EX30. It’s a small SUV that is set to have its global debut and reservation books open up on June 7.

Not too much is known about the EX30 right now other than the fact it’s going to be pretty small. The press release for the vehicle is only a handful of sentences, but two of them have to do with the size of the EX30.

“We have big news: something small is coming,” and “Thinking small is one of our biggest ideas,” is probably a good indicator of the EX30’s size. It’s probably a safe bet to assume the new vehicle is going to slot below Volvo’s 40 series of EVs like the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge. Based on the very weird teaser video, the EX30 has a bit more of a traditional SUV shape than those two crossovers, so don’t be surprised if it rides a bit higher than them.

Volvo EX30 is designed with safety in mind

Ahead of the June 7 full unveiling of its upcoming EX30, Volvo today wants to remind us that it's worked hard over the past few decades to make its brand synonymous with safety, and that apparently won't change with the new model, even though it's the smallest SUV the company has ever made.

Small, but still a Volvo - that seems to be the idea that the company wants you to remember. Because of its size, it's pretty clear that the EX30 will be positioned as a city-first SUV, and that's why Volvo's new press release contains words like: "it looks after both you and others in hectic urban environments".

The EX30 has a door opening alert, which warns through both visual and audio cues when you're about to open the door in front of a passing cyclist or other traffic user, thus saving you the split second it takes to look in the side mirror attached to said door to accomplish the exact same thing. Then again, looking in the mirror doesn't come with visual and audio cues, so there's that.

Volvo EX30 to launch on June 7

Volvo may be calling the EX30 marketing campaign “Something small is coming” but there is no getting away from the fact that the EX30 will be huge for the company. This small electric crossover will very likely be Volvo’s bestseller in every market, and the company knows it very well.

The official press release doesn’t reveal much apart from the date - June 7 - but we already know a lot about this upcoming electric crossover. Volvo accidentally revealed some photos of the EV yesterday on its website, and together with the patent images leaked, Volvo hasn’t got many more secrets left to hide.

The Volvo EX30 has said no to buttons

EX30 aimed at young people goes all-in on less is more

The upcoming Volvo EX30 electric SUV - teased for the first time late last year and again earlier this month at a distance best described as telescopic - will be making a big thing of its smartphone connectivity and clever storage, the firm has said.

Remember Volvo is going after Gen Z with this car, so it’s stuffing it with things young people like: namely eco-friendly materials (including good ol’ trendy denim), a full-width soundbar for music and podcast goodness (a Harmon Kardon upgrade will be available), plus a covers-all-bases 12.3-inch screen.
Volvo’s theory is that lumping everything into one display will make the rest of the cabin feel ‘calm’, and it insists convenience won’t be compromised by dozens of infuriating sub-menus.

“Inside the EX30 we continue our strategy of contextual and focused interfaces,” explains head of UX Tom Stovicek. “On the single screen, key driving information such as speed and charge levels are positioned prominently at the top, with navigation, media and controls easily visible and accessible below. We also include a contextual bar that gives you the most relevant functions for your needs at any time.” We live in hope.

Volvo teases the EX30 interior

The clock is ticking, and Volvo’s marketing machine is hard at work churning out snippets of info and feeding our curiosity. The smallest electric Volvo will officially debut on June 7, and despite the company's efforts, most of the details are already out. What we haven’t seen yet is the interior, and Volvo decided to fix that for us.

The little EX30 is going to give us the best of the Scandinavian design - both on the outside and inside of the vehicle. The company is making sure that despite the EX30 being the smallest and most affordable electric Volvo, at no point the car feels neither small or cheap. Materials used by Volvo in the cabin of the EX30 are quite interesting - we have denim, flax, and wool combined with what the company calls “expressive colors” - that’s a first for Volvo, the king of gray and beige.

What is more interesting though, are the storage ideas - and the little EX30 has plenty of them. Take the glove box - no longer in its usual place, now it hides in the center under the screen, making the awkward reaching by the driver a thing of a past. Slide-out cup holder with a hot drink support hides neatly in the armrest when not needed - simple and very effective.

The rear passengers enjoy dedicated phone pockets in the front seatbacks and an additional storage box that slides out of the center console. The tailgate apparently comes with a handy size guide to help with buying flat-packed furniture - how Swedish is that?

Over here in the land of cheese and tulips the polestars are popular with business types, while the personal family vehicles are volvos for med to high income families. I can see this being a hit for middle income families, as the price is reasonable.

Volvo EX30

As a small SUV that does big Volvo things, the new fully electric Volvo EX30 is designed to be as safe as you'd expect from us. It is designed to have the smallest CO2 footprint of any Volvo car to date, and to make people's lives safer, more convenient and more enjoyable through cutting-edge technology and Scandinavian design.

Revealed to the world in Milan, Italy, the EX30 is Volvo's first small premium SUV and expands the constantly growing, all-electric offering to four models. As the market is rapidly moving towards full electrification, the EX30 will help us capture growing demand for fully electric cars in a fast-growing segment.

What's more, the attractive pricing of the Volvo EX30 - which starts at around EUR 36,000 - means Volvo customers get a premium all-electric SUV for a similar price as an internal combustion engine-powered equivalent. The EX30 will also be available with Care by Volvo subscription package, with its set pricing and transparent ordering process, making ordering one a breeze.

"The fully electric EX30 might be our smallest ever SUV, but it's a big deal for our customers and a big deal for us as a company," said Jim Rowan, Volvo's chief executive. "We like to say the EX30 is small yet mighty, because it delivers on everything you'd want from a Volvo but in a smaller package. Like any Volvo, it's an outstanding product which is safe and designed around people and their needs."

The Volvo EX30 embodies all of Volvo design values in a smaller format. A long wheelbase, large wheels and equal overhangs bring balance and refinement to the exterior. It's distinctly electric, with a confident face, closed shield and a digital rendition of the Thor's Hammer headlights. Five vibrant exterior colours, from stylish Cloud Blue to bright and expressive Moss Yellow - the latter inspired by lichen growing on rocks along the Swedish west coast - give it character and personality.
