Volvo reimagines the work van with the new EX30 Cargo
Volvo is famous for making safe SUVs, favoured by parents driving their kids to school or soccer practice. Now, the Swedish company is trying something very different - they are moving into the world of work trucks and delivery vans. The new Volvo EX30 Cargo is the first commercial vehicle from the brand in the UK. It is a small, fully electric van based on the popular EX30.
The Volvo EX30 Cargo is a "car-derived van." Volvo simply took the small EX30 SUV and changed the inside to carry stuff instead of people. Engineers worked hard to make it useful for business owners - all the back seats have been replaced with a completely flat floor, giving the vehicle a lot more room for boxes, tools, or deliveries.
This tiny van offers a cargo capacity of 1,000 l and it can carry a total weight of 390 kg. You cannot move a whole house with it, but it is perfect for small businesses that need to drive around the city. Volvo also added a bulkhead between the driver and the cargo, keeping the driver safe if they have to slam on the brakes and things start sliding around.
Volvo modified the rear side panels and the doors to make loading things easier and added extra lights in the back so you can see what you are doing at night. For businesses that need to bolt down heavy equipment, there is a special frame under the floor with mounting points. It is clear that Volvo thought about the people who will actually use this vehicle for work every day.
There are several different motor options available. The entry-level version is called the P3 - it has a 150 hp electric motor and is built for efficiency. If you need more speed, you can choose the P5 version with 272 hp, and for those who really want to fly between delivery stops, there is even a P8 version with all-wheel drive and a massive 428 hp. Most people do not expect a delivery van to be that fast, but Volvo decided to offer it anyway.
Range is a big deal for anyone driving electric cars for work. The P3 model is designed to go as far as 483 km on a full charge. This should be more than enough for a full day of driving around town. The van also comes with an 11 kW on-board charger and a heat pump that helps the battery stay efficient even when the weather gets cold outside.
