Launch Review: New Audi A5 is a stylish and high-tech, but expensive, replacement for the A4
VERDICT
The new Audi A5 is a stylish and desirable replacement for the old A4, which is now larger in size, stature, and status. However, in the process, it has become even more expensive than rivals such as the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class, and once you add those options, it can easily morph into a million-and-a-half proposition. Its pricing may well limit its popularity.

Audi South Africa has restructured its options lists into easier-to-understand bundles. In the A5, these include a Tech plus upgrade (R45 000), which introduces matrix LED headlamps, keyless entry, and myriad advanced driver assistance features, and Tech pro (R100 000) for digital OLED taillamps, the passenger display, adjustable dampers, heated seating throughout, and adaptive cruise control.
Other options include an upgrade to 20-inch alloy wheels (19-inch items are standard), a switchable (liquid crystal) transparency panoramic sunroof, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, sports seats and a comprehensive ambient interior lighting setup.
Verdict
Including the introduction of the A5 into an “unfashionable” executive sedan segment, and confirmation that Audi South Africa will introduce the S5 exclusively in station wagon form, while it would be easy to accuse the brand’s local office of a scatter gun approach in attempting to regain market share, I instead get the impression that careful consideration is being made about ways for this sophisticated German brand to stand out from the crowd. This plan, of course, only works if you can successfully capture the imagination – and the pocket – of a willing audience and if you have all-new versions of traditionally high-volume products, including a best-selling new Q3 Sportback, waiting in the wings, which Audi undoubtedly has.

How well did the new Audi A5 Sedan sell in its launch month?
The new Audi A5 Sedan hit the market in South Africa in August 2025. So, how many units of this new R1.1-million+ model were sold locally in its first partial month?

On 11 August 2025, Cars.co.za was the first to publish local pricing for the new Audi A5 Sedan. Just over a week later, Audi South Africa announced that the newcomer had hit local dealerships. So, how many units were sold in Mzansi in August 2025?
Well, while keeping in mind that the new A5 Sedan was technically on the market for just a couple of weeks (making this a partial rather than full month of sales), we can confirm that 20 units were registered in South Africa in August.
Of those, 17 units were sold through the dealer channel, with the remaining 3 units reported as so-called “single” registrations (that is, vehicles Audi SA kept and licensed for its own use; the company also reported 11 single registrations in July, the month prior to launch).
In addition to these sales, the German automaker’s local division registered 5 examples of the outgoing B9-series A4 Sedan in August, plus 3 units of the likewise departing previous-generation A5 (which was offered in Coupé, Cabriolet and Sportback form).
