I signed a contract about 10 months back for 20mbps ADSL. Loved it - was quick (17mbps and 2MB/sec downloads) with excellent attenuation but borderline SNR (6) at the synced 20mps. Overnight it just died and I logged a fault.

Telkom have now 'fixed' the issue (though, I'm yet to see how stable it is ...) - but now the sync is between 11-13mbps, so pretty much half the speed. SNR is now 6.4 at that speed, which seems odd to me ?

If this stays like this, I'm surely entitled to move my package mid contract to a 10mbps and pay less?

How possible is it they dropped my package by mistake? :/

Current - I'll try search old threads and get the ones from last week.

That looks like your line might still be noisy. Have you picked up your phone and checked if there is any static?

You should have better SNR than that with that attenuation. I have better SNR than you do and my attenuation is 41. (syncing 10Mbps with 9db SNR)

Nah, I just got home - I'll plug it in quickly to see.

Searching my old threads, I'd get 6.2 Noise Margin when synced at 21000 or something. I always thought as the sync goes lower, the SNR goes higher? So my guess would be if now I'm syncing at 11481, my Noise Margin would be great?

Yeah.

The higher your sync, the lower the SNR gets (more noise). The attenuation should never change.
The higher your SNR, the better. You want at to try for 10dB, but anything better than 6dB is fine. I don't think it is even possible to have below 6dB anymore due to Telkom's new system that will force your line to 6dB if you go under.

Thanks, man ...

Guess I just need to live with half the speed now :(

Ok - everything died. It's trying to connect at 20mpbs by itself and can't ... There's no way I can force it to sync lower?

PS And static when I pick up the phone.

I get between 4.1 and 4.4 at 15mbps connection.

It literally did this over night, but now at least I understand what the issue is (noise). Appears they cannot fix it either, so will drop my package tomorrow to 10mbps and it should be ok.

No changing your package won't solve the issue. The issue here is you have a line fault. Telkom MUST fix it. You line is faulty and they MUST fix it. You attenuation is very good but SNR so low. Too much noise which means you line is exposed to the air, broken joints, moisture on the line, faulty pots filter or anything that can cause noise on the line.

Did you check for noise on the phone?
If noise is the issue, no matter your sync, you will still have problems.
On the bright side, for every week a fault is open you claim the month or something like that.

Yea. That's what Telkom rep said ; they have no option but to fix it. But it's horrible now - noise from 20 to 10 to 0 and back in under a minute

Yup I log faults when something is wrong a phone billing with my reference for my credit notes. They do credit me for any downtime be it adsl or voice. I don't spend R1000 a month on Telkom for downtime...

Yup - horrible hiss on the phone. Telkom rep said that even though the guy came yesterday, a line test shows there's a short on one of the legs (no idea - just repeating him ;)

Hoping tomorrow - but as you say say, no cost since 19th

After 9 days, I at least have a stable connection (2.7mbps @ 6db). Telkom have confirmed a short on the line escalated on 25 August, so here's hoping that it's repaired by the weekend

EDIT : I rebooted and I'm now at 2.1mbps - feel like back in 90s

Overstatement of the century. I get what you're saying, but you still couldn't be more wrong. I don't think the internet would even work a 56k anymore, sites have simply grown too big for that speed. What you have is still a very decent speed, nowhere near what you should have but even 720P youtube doesn't have to buffer too much (if you remove the 25% pre-buffer restrictions) at that speed.

2Mbps is still useless tbh.

Nope, I generally sync at 2.6MBps and that's fine. Perhaps not quite enough for the most competitive games but every once in a while I still manage to be the hero/ragequit inducer in Rocket League so it's ok (at 176-208 ping). And youtube is fine too, perhaps not for 1080P stuff, but 720P is fine (without buffering restrictions).

You are over-exaggerating. We'll chat again once you drop to 0.2 MBps (which is still faster than 56k).

Arrived again with no phone call *grrrr*

I can see this is going to be a pattern. No phone call... Arrive any day and any time... Then say they've attempted 10 times.

And I'm almost certain I don't need to be home for the issue
