HEy all,

I need some help please:

I have upgraded my line from 10mbps to 20mbps (about 5 hours ago)..

On speedtest.net my speeds are around 13mbps, but on mybroadband and on my phone around 5mbps.

Download speeds of files are also around 400kbps, why is there such a large difference in speed tests and what could the issue be in terms of DL speeds?

Router: Dlink 2750u

Current Telkom profile speed
NA kbps
Downstream speed
20480 kbps
Downstream SNR
10.8 dB
Upstream SNR
8.9 dB
Max downstream speed
10240 kbps
Downstream attenuation
7.6 dB
Upstream attenuation
3.8 dB

Perhaps I need to wait a bit longer for line to be fully regarded or?

Thanks!

Mhm, something is wrong there. Reboot the router and what ISP package do you have?

Hey bud,

Appreciate the reply :).

I am on a capped package with WA.. Have reset and no change to values as per OP, the consultant did tell me it may take a few days for it to regrade, but speedtest seems like it has already happened?

Also not sure why speedtests are so vastly different? all on same Wifi connection (13mb Vs. 5mb)..

Lan cable Test Vs Wifi test yield the same results..

Port has also been reset..

Not sure what a crc error is??

Hey,

So seems to be a synching issue that may have been resolved, getting around 15 - 16mbps now, it is consistently in that region on speedtest.net and on phone, mybroadband speedtest is a lot slower though, not sure why..

My line is with Afrihost, and I requested an upgrade from 10mbps to 20mbps this morning, after the Telkom ADSL Checker said that my line can get up to 20mbps. About 5-10 minutes after requesting the upgrade, my line was syncing at 20mbps (20539kbps down / 1019kbps up). This is 20mbps ADSL2+, and not VDSL. There is no VDSL or MSANs in our area, and I am connecting using an ADSL-only modem: Telkom branded Netgear DGN2200Mv2. I live about 1.5km from the exchange.

So my line syncs at a stable 20mbps, but all my speed tests max out at exactly 10mbps. Multithreaded downloads in Firefox using DownThemAll (with 10 threads) also max out 1.2MB/s which is almost 10mbps (9.8 roughly). So there seems to be something throttling my speed to 10mbps. Phoned Afrihost support, and they have no clue. My modulation is set to ADSL2+ only. I played around with the various modulation types, but the only one that gives me a sync of 20mbps is ADSL2+. Choosing ADSL2 gives me a sync of 12mbps, but the line is still rate-limited to 10mbps. Switching back to ADSL2+ brings my sync back to 20mbps, but the line is still rate-limited to 10mbps.

I have a 150GB capped account with Afrihost, which is unshaped, unthrottled.

Does anyone have any idea what the issue might be?

Edit: Nevermind. Asked them to do a port reset, and low and behold, I am now getting great speeds. Up to 17mbps on speedtest.net, and 2.1MB/s (16.8mbps) on multithreaded download of Windows update.

Just for the future - Telkom do indeed offer 20Mbps ADSL2+ services now :)

I upgraded my ADSL to 20Mbps with Afrihost and it was activated yesterday. This morning I did a speed test and the result are about 17Mbps download and 1.3Mbps upload. I am using a DLINK 2750u ADSL2+ router. At first I thought I needed a VDSL router but maybe not.
