Hi

I just stumbled over this and I just can't make any sense of it

I recently purchased a couple of 6w Cree downlights from electronic lights they are locally made so I thought let me try these so I can support local suppliers

I have a 5.8 meg adsl line my SNR is not good where I live it is usually around 6 when my modem syncs at 5.8 meg

I turn on the led downlights and my SNR drops drastically and modem resyncs to 3.7 Megs when I switch off the lights the SNR jumps back to normal

It was a complete fluke that I stumbled on to this

How can this happen I was thinking of replacing the rubbish telkom cable with utp looks like I am going to have to do it now of I can't switch on the lights

Anyone else having this issue

I also get a lot of interference from my electric fence does anyone know how to shield against this when the electric fence goes down in my complex my adsl line jumps to 7 Megs

That sounds like dodgy electrical infrastructure in your complex. Also, maybe your telkom lines are running parallel to electrical wires that could cause these strange happenings.

The strange thing is I have a couple of 12v led downlights I put them in the same place with tranformers as these Cree ones and there is no issue so it can't be that

I'm guessing your telephone cable is routing somewhere along that transformer or electrical cabling and it isn't properly shielded.

Generally you don't want any kind of networking cable running close to electrical or lighting components.

It isn't actually the house is pretty new I was here when telkom ran the cable it's that rubbish analogue telephone cable but it goes though a separate conduit through the wall
The problem is the black cable came in just below the main power junction for the house it might cross it there but it should not run along side electrical cable

I just wonder how the interference can get so bad only with these down lights I have put many different lights in these sockets without issue but these LEDs seam to cause huge issue.

Sounds like your phone wires are too close to the lights wires in you house. Also these locally produced downlights do not seem to have any form of phase angle correction... If you can measure the inductance of the lights (or if it is listed on the box) you could probably just put a capacitor in parallel to correct it.

If you don't have the tools to do so, or know what I'm talking about, it will be easier to just go buy "proper" lights.

That's funny these are supposed to be proper lights the Chinese ones I have don't do this but the 12v and I have transformer problems with them.

I have been doing a lot of research on downlights and I just can't find one that is a direct replacement for a halogen downlight Osram eurolux all these reputable brands fall short in colour of light angle of light and just intensity.

The closest I have come http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/578954584/230v_led_light_bulbs_230v_7w.html

They Chinese colour is not 100% but light angle and intensity is right on

I was just trying these out I might go back to the Chinese lights then or just halogens and forget led for now

thanks for the replys

Fascinating.

It might be worth contacting the local manufacturer. See how they respond. Do they care enough to take you seriously?

Keep us updated.

Or simply get a power factor correction box and plug it close to your lights and see if that works or makes your snr better.

Hi There,
Pretty much as everyone has said. Keep data cables away from electrical sources. It could be that the transformer is giving out a lot of interference much as the electric fence will do.
get a decent electrician in to assist in isolating the problem. They will be able to what agentrfr suggested

Regards

Tim

My 12v down lighters kill my garage door opener remote signal when in use.

I suspect the Led driver circuitry in these things generate a lot of RF noise. So coupling with phone lines wouldn't surprise me!

As already said - move your phone cable as far from the lights / cabling as possible.

OT: As for colour temp and angle - I have had awesome success with the Phillips models! I have the 6.5w 12v ones. Got them via the Eskom rollout, but I see Makro sells them now.

With a name like killkom, are you surprised your communications equipment is failing?
