1. How on earth do you people in S-Africa survive on a 2Gb cap ?
I live in UK, Just looking at my my average monthly downloads are around 210Gb + uploads of around 20Gb.
I just got a FREE HPSDA modem + 3Gb per month (3,7Mb download speed) from my mobile phone company (www.three.co.uk), 2 weeks free trial and then ÂŁ10 per month onwards.

2. Am I correct in thinking that providing data bundle and download speed of 256k/512k/1mb costs exacly the same to ISPs no matter how much traffic passes thru ? Isn't it just a way for ISPs (in S.A) to charge customer more ?

Generally here in UK and other EU countries one would get the fastest available speed for your address (if on ADSL) or just plain 10/20mb broadband if one is on cable, all for the same low prce. At home I have 3.7mb/890k up broadband (provider is capable of 24mb but I live too far from exchange) and pay only ÂŁ18 per month, uncapped with www.bethere.co.uk the BEST ISP in the UK !

Well I don't. Once I get capped at about 3.5GB then I have to buy more bandwidth for the rest of the month.

I don't care about line speed I just want capacity. 384Kbps is fine but for god's sake I need 10GB/month.

Browsing and work related downloads eat 7GB a month.
That is without torrents etc.

Lol

Hello mate... WELCOME TO S.A:D
1st of all 3gb is the standard offering and as for surviving, we dont have much of a choice:sick:..You can get higher caps at a higher,I mean HIGHER (OK i dont think you Understand me) I MEAN AT A WAAAYYYY HIGHER price S.A style:cool:
im sure you ISP back there was cool but nothing beats ours lmfao in prices that is;)

Another thing i dont understand how people from the UK move to S.A:confused: I just dont get it i mean thats UK people:eek:....

Made promises to them.
Pay them a fortune?

Otherwise, yeah - I do not get it.

No amount of money in the country would get me back here once I am gone.

I JUST got my British passport after having waited 8,5 years ! 2 years on working holiday (didnt count nothin'), 4 years work permit, 1 year perm resident and 1 year to go thru whole aquiring citizenship thing.
I was back in SA a few months ago. I wasn't much bother about broadband because we had such a good time that we didn't even got to use internet. I almost got ideas to return back to S-Africa (with my UK passport in the pocket).
Damn tourists ! !

And BTW, I wondered how international companies cope with the bandwidth limitations in S-Africa ? Can anybody working at a international company please explain how you cope ? Do you impose any restrictions on your staff using internet ?
Are staff able to use internet freely at work ?
Do you impose a bandwidht restriction on surfing ?
Do you impose a restriction on amount of email attachments staff may send/receive ?

I work at (an major Oil company) Canary Wharf, internally we've got a 20mb (public) wireless network with no proxy, only a WEP key required to use (which is very easy to obtain).
I'm counting my blessings !
Ja, ek tel my zegeningen !

I know, I've been in the UK for 7 months and have been downloading at least 200 gigs a month. Back in SA I somehow managed on a 2 gig bundle through vodacom. I can't wait till SA catches up with the rest of the world.

Well lately I've been limiting myself to 50gigs a month.

We CAN have the same in this country as in the UK, but why would Telkom/IS/etc do that?

It's like going to Sun City, for example, where you pay R15 for a 330ml can of Coke. R15 doesn't get you anything extra, just a Coke. You are guarenteed though that it will be cold.

You bitch, you moan, but you still buy it; and Sun City keeps asking R15...

Well with all the Eskom load shedding its much easier:eek:. Seriously I have just had to refrain myself from downloading. Although there are some months where I have already overcapped my 2GB (yes by the 2nd)
