2nd hand compaq evo n1050n

been looking for a 2nd hand laptop, just for email & internet browsing and was offered this Compaq Evo N1050N for R1500-00. looks in good order as everything works. Not sure about the price? any thoughts?

as I said everything works, comes with charger & batteries r still usable - there r no dents / scratches / cracks of note other than normal finger wear on the touch pad. It is of course a little dated, but I'm just going to use it for email / FB etc. I will put win7 on as it seems to be a better OS, well at least out of the MS OS products anyway.

Yeah just first upgrade the RAM otherwise stick to XP, you want at least 1 gig preferably 2 if you're gonna run Windows 7.

yes 512 is a bit low will speak to the seller and see if he has any lying around not sure if it can handle modern ram?

You will really struggle to find a new laptop for under R4k. Not including netbooks here.

I used to have an Evo N1050N many years ago. It must be quite an old laptop. Mine is dead and buried some years ago now.

sure u can, I was looking at a netbook - but they just to small for my large hands & screen is way to small. IMO they good enough for kids

We had plenty of those at the company I worked for 5 years ago, they were very slow, to slow to work on. They sold them back then for R1500 secondhand, I would not pay more that R500 for that laptop now. But if you take it, add at least 2GB ram in it, even if you use XP

And most of them only has USB 1.1, so make sure it has 2.0 if you are planning on coping stuff to external drives...

btw is that laptop a dual core or single core cpu? cause single core 1.8 ghz is very slow

if dual core its not bad then for starter laptop, since you not wanting a netbook cause of size limitation

also if using windows xp 32 bit, 512 mb memory is fine
1 gig is better if you browsing and working at same time etc.

It also depends if it's a Pentium M 1.8ghz or Pentium 4 1.8ghz, because Pentium 4 is way worse.

no it's a single core / Pentium M 1.8Ghz

I think it's fine for my needs like email / FB / skype and browsing the net. I have 2 other desktop pc that I use for design work, so if I have to download large stuff I can use them.
