Johannesburg - Three men were arrested on Sunday in connection with the murder of a 40-year-old farmer at Potchefstroom, North West police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Lesego Metsi said Johannes Strydom was attacked at the gate of his farm, Naderfontein, on Saturday at about 13:00.

"The suspect hit Strydom with a blunt object and he died. He (the suspect) then dragged his body into the garage, took a Mazda bakkie, cellphone and wallet before fleeing."Metsi said the car was found abandoned in the Potchefstroom CBD.

A 21-year-old -man was arrested on Sunday at a neighbouring farm. He then pointed out two more people who were found in possession of the wallet and cellphone, Metsi said.

The 21-year-old man was charged with murder and house robbery and the other two with possession of stolen goods.

The three men were expected to appear at the Potchefstroom Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Well done for catching them so quickly.

Really sad at the senseless killing though.

Very sad indeed, this country would do a lot better without all these brutal killings.

Well done to the police for catching these scumbags.

In the year 2010, what do you do when you're too proud to ask the local farmer for a lift into town?

Kill him, take his bakkie to town yourself and then ditch it when you arrive, naturally!

R500 bail and he's gone. If not, he'll be sentenced to 8 years, yet only have to serve 4 for good behavior, but actually released after 6 months, to make space in the prisons or by presidential pardon at Christmas. The other two will get off on suspended sentence.

Well looks like giving these fusks bail is not a good idea.

Complete disregard for life and looks like robbery was not the motive here

Lightscribe you called it correctly well the bail bit ....

Farmers should mechanise and turn every farming community into a security complex.

Potchefstroom - When guests arrived for a braai on Saturday on a farm near Potchefstroom, they discovered their host's body with a chain around his ankles.

The murderer presumably attacked 40-year-old Johan Strydom with an iron rod at his gate on Saturday at about 13:00, Lesego Metsi, North West police spokesperson said.

He was then tied to the back of his Mazda Drifter bakkie with a rope and dragged to his store room.

According to Metsi, the murderer then closed the store room's door and fled with the bakkie and Strydom's cellphone and wallet.

The bakkie was found deserted later on Saturday in Potchefstroom and a 21-year-old man was arrested.

He led the police to two other men, but at this stage they are not being connected with the murder. However, the same two men were arrested on Sunday morning after the police found some of Strydom's stolen property in their possession.

Ernst Meiring, who had been in the Duet congregation in Potchefstroom with Strydom, said he and another friend discovered the body when they went to the farm for a braai.

"We looked for him because he wasn't there and he'd been expecting us. We found him in the store room."

Jurie Schoeman, Strydom's good friend and one of the first people at the scene, said there was a chain bound around Strydom's ankles.

"Johan's hands were badly bruised. We think he fought back. He was such a good person. We just don't understand why this happened."

Strange calls

According to Schoeman, Strydom would have testified in court later this month, after recently catching a robber in a house on the neighbouring farm where his aunt, Martie Strydom, lives. The man was released on bail.

Schoeman said Strydom told him a week ago about how he was receiving strange calls. Each time he answered, the phone would be put down.

"About two months ago they broke into Johan's house and he then also reported a case of burglary."

Meiring said Strydom "wouldn't even hurt a fly".

According to Schoeman, who is also a farmer in the area, Strydom always put others first.

"He treated his workers well and he was always the peacemaker. This is a very big loss for us."

The police arrested the 21-year-old on a neighbouring farm, said Metsi.

The man then pointed out to police where he had thrown his bloody clothes down a pit latrine.

Metsi could not confirm whether this man is the robber that Strydom had caught earlier.

The three men are expected to appear in the Potchefstroom Magistrate's Court on Monday

Getting so sick and tired of these animals butcjering innocent civilians
I can't stress how much I relate. It's absolutely sickening. I don't like to call them animals, but they've chosen to prove they are, so it's fact
On a more positive note though, good job to the police for catching them ..

This whole thing is planned to frightened the farmers and if they would not take arms they will all be dead.

Animals behave better than this.

You know alot of people usually got to rehabilitation places.Problem for me...when they get out of jail or what not they have nothing...no job etc so they just go back into crime. I rate they should educate them while they are in prison...maybe get a matric or even study a degree through UNISA.Im sure most people would rather want their tax money used for these kind of things rather than getting wasted on something else.

What a refreshing ray of sunshine you are. Well that's one way of looking at it.

Here's another, you're a miserable git.
