Well, that's your opinion. Personally I think SA is a bit of fck up because the people in it don't give a rat's ass about each other. Combine that with an oversupply of guns and you end up with - literally - a bloody mess.

But perhaps you could explain to me why you suddenly put so much faith in the SA police just because they're carrying guns? As a police service it leaves much to be desired - it's overworked, undertrained and clueless about what to do ... and you say as much yourself ... but give these useless morons a gun and suddenly they're like gods to you!

Guns aren't very discriminatory, dude. They'll kill you no matter who you are. And if you're unlucky enough to be anywhere near the crossfire when the cops and the criminals start duking it out on the street, you're just as likely to end up dead as the bad guys.

Call me a treehugger if you wish, but the idea of being dead doesn't appeal.

But not only do you believe in the magical properties of police guns to only kill bad guys, you also believe that shooting a bad guy in the street every now and then is going to make a sort of difference.

That kinda shows you haven't really thought things through. There's too many of the buggers for you gun-nuts to pick off one by one. And every time a poor person ends up the sole supporter of a household at the age of 16 with no formal education to their name, more often than not you end up with yet another criminal. And it's happening all the time.

You may think "shoot to kill" is an awesome idea, but did you ever stop to wonder whether it might not encourage the criminals to shoot to kill first?

I'm not batty at all. I don't think anyone should have guns. I've heard they get used to kill people.

Guns in the hands of criminals is bad enough, but guns in the hands of an increasingly desperate, overwhelmed and inexperienced police force is just scary. What do you expect them to do - ask you if you're a criminal before they kill you?

If you want to stop the crime and the criminals, you have to come up with a better plan than "shoot the bastards".
 
stun guns, followed by a lethal cocktail administered immediately after court - publicly, where the criminal will go into his death throes in as much pain as possible. then again, if a mistake was ever to be made...

thats why scene of the crime killing is best. the perps are there, no legal ramifications.

I would agree with you, except you're describing Utopia. Reality is criminals don't get guns by legal means, this is why they are called criminals. If you made guns illegal, guess who'd still have them? You'd only be disarming the police force and law abiding citizens, allowing the underworld to flourish. The police would be completely defenseless. The thin blue line would be non existent. The country would fall into chaos as bank robberies, cash in transit heists and violent crime soars. How would the police counter groups of highly organised syndicates armed to the teeth? Ask them politely to please stop shooting?

Every once in a while we get some good news that criminal scum has been killed. But if you pay close attention to the news a lot of cops are shot by criminals.

Disarm the police and make them even more vulnerable? Do you for one moment think a criminal is going to give up his gun voluntarily at a police station? Why do you think they steal guns from honest people who keep them for self-defence?

Dude, the police are making no difference to the crime problem in SA. None whatsoever. And half the guns that get issued to the police force end up in the hands of criminals anyway. Your solution is to give the police more guns. At the end of the day, you're just arming the criminals and giving them another excuse to shoot people.

What are the statistics? 50+ people get murdered in SA every day? How is killing even more people supposed to be a good thing?

And how exactly are you going to differentiate between "honest people" who keep guns for self-defence and criminals who want to give themselves an edge? Economic situation? Skin colour?

The police are trained in the use of weapons, they are neither desperate nor inexperienced.

Untill someone comes up with a better alternative i vote we continue shooting the bastards. Hopefully they will all be shot before the "solution" is found.

We need to create jobs and educate the povo to fill these jobs - this will take care of the future - the current problem needs to be delt with by........, you guesed it, shooting the bastards.

If the murderers of the 50 people are shot there will be no one left to commit said murders.

It is quite easy to tell the honest shooters from the dishonest, the honest ones are the ones defending life and property, the others are the ones trying to take or destroy it - race is irrelevent, economic situation is hard to establish at a glance.

Unfortunately the shooting class are already created and it will be hard to get them to go to work, even if there were jobs for them. We need to concentrate on the next batch.
