3 reasons your Internet is slower when using a VPN

VPN usage in SA has more to do with bypassing geoblocks than greater privacy imho. It's obvious that passing traffic via a third party to achieve either though will result in degraded service as by doing so you would not be using any of the locally peered content closer to your network.

I doubt that (premium) VPN's are mainly used for geo-unblocking. And if you use a VPN that has South African servers (NordVPN, ExpressVPN, ProtonVPN, Windscribe) you can expect 99% performance, with maybe a small latency increase.

My experience with anyone asking for advice in regards to VPN service usage is generally related to accessing content like BBC/Netflix US etc rather than a concern about privacy or security. Those who are worried about the sniffing of their traffic on public wifi etc usually opt for their own VPN services rather than third parties.
 
Port forwards on RDP???
Every beancounter in South Africa uses a broadband router to port forward from the internet to their Pastel server. There will be an article very soon about all these Pastel servers being hacked in South Africa and people's bank accounts being cleaned out.
Its typically windows remote desktop using rdp.
 
Same result on any ISP. Couple of tricks in the setup and Bob's your uncle.

Your setup is either degrading regular traffic or prioritising VPN connections which is probably what your "couple of tricks" is doing. You shouldn't be having a 22ms ping time to local peering especially if you're fibre based.

There is another test without the VPN with latency now at 5ms. Speedtest servers are kak with their consistency!
There is no way I could prioritize squat over a broadband connection. Maybe shape...

The local ones should be consistent unless you have competing traffic or problematic connectivity. The only way a VPN can be faster than a direct connection to the same server is because of deprioritisation or prioritisation of traffic at some stage along the route. Let's not get bogged down on the terminology ... Shaping/throttling/policing etc.

Speedtest servers are not consistent. Run 10 tests and they will all have variations.
There are other ways of optimization.

I'm not disputing that. I'm stating that a connection via a VPN server with a single thread with no packet interference cannot provide a faster result than a direct connection to the same destination. It could be very similar if in close proximity but never better. The reason is because the VPN server will introduce additional latency not only for the transport but also the additional encryption layer.
 
i ran IPVanish last year for a year and my downloads were exactly the same as normal, my Freedownloadmanager showed constant download speeds. I always pointed to a JHB server then

That is like telling a mechanic to assume a tractor, bakkie and sedan are all the same thing!

Unless you compress over the VPN and use the MyBroadband Speedtest server which loves compression.
