Ag cry me a river. So you find something good & use it and all is well in your world...but when others also want to download a bit then they are "exploiting" it.
Ok so lets take a scenario shall we
Say there was another news server in south africa, one that has basically been forgotten about in the basement of a ISP. Now lets see, say 300 people know about this and are going full tilt (like the old IS news days when it worked properly). Those 300 people are using it or exploiting it whatever you want to call it. The ISP's traffic goes up but with 300 people its just part of internet higher usage, no-ones going looking to detail in it.
Until.....
Fool posts on mybb and THOUSANDS of people go and jump on it, it spreads like wildfire.
Comes to end of month and ISP notices their traffic increase exponentially over the prior month and decides to investigate, finds source and cripples or disables it.
Now you have "shared" the service for everyone to use, but since the huge usage the service gets crippled/shut down.
Those 300 users wouldve slowly grown via mouth to mouth and cause a gradual increase, the service would eventually get investigated and crippled / shut down.
So its 2 things.
1) Let it slowly grow on its own and people enjoy the service
2) Blast the service and let it shut down after a few months max.
Where is the logic ?
Your view seems to be a "everyone gets it or no-one gets it" view, thats the worst of all.
Anyone with half a brain knew the uunet service wouldnt last for ever as it would grow too big, everyone with 10% of a brain knew that the end would come a lot sooner as soon as it went public.
