Hi

I need to setup a base station on a 30 storey building to provide WIFI coverage to 5Km radius. I want to use 4 sector antenna's. Does each sector require its own radio or should I use a signal splitter.

Also my concern is how close to my high site will signal be available 'cause I think I need to squash the signal downwards because some of my client sites are not high and located within 1 Km of high site. I'm scared I'm going to send signal over them.

Is it possible to achieve what I am attempting? Besides for Miro where can I get good sector antenna's? Any comments and advice would be appreciated.

Thnx

I'm no expert, but you need 4 radios for the 4 sectors. As far is the overshooting the close clients, you can always adjust the sectors, they have quite a decent height beamwidth.

But ask on Jawug, they are far more knowledgeable than myself.

Jawug does not provide advice for commercial entities trying to deploy wifi networks. You can pay a consultant to do that for you, or pay for training from Miro.

Oops, I was under the impression that this was a non-commercial venture, still cant tell whether it is or not.

What rodent said then

I was also under the impression that this was a commercial venture.. why else would you want to cover a 5km radius if you only needed to reach a select group of friends?

I have to ask: is that *really* 30 storeys, or only 30m? ..'cos multi-storey buildings are typically built at 3m/storey- which makes your gig 90m up! Also, at that range, short of your highsite being in some kind of a valley, you're going to be able to DX that signal for a *very* long way.

Mooting the point that you're on top of a high building, you DO realise that it's very unlikely you're going to be able to make a nice neat li'l cluster in the middle of the roof, 'cos at the very least you'll end up with the problem of the building casting a mondo radio shadow to anything close by -say within 1km... (and that's before the liklihood that all the prime space is already taken by other people anyway). Then, a practical point: have you got the head for heights that working on the edge of a 90m high building requires? oh, and don't forget being properly equipped from a safety POV for working at that height...

At a guess (disclaimer: I'm going on gut feel RHRN, I'm not nearly experienced enough in this specific endeavour to be able to state conclusively) it probably is: of course, it will take very thorough application of two pesky principles: *good* planning and money- a distressing amount of it, radio hardware tends not to be cheap! As to antennas, you're unlikely to get a better in-country price than Miro (and certainly not with nearly the same level of pre/post-sales support!). There are only a handful of shops that sell antennas and, from what I've seen of pricing, the rest tend to be quite definitely higher in initial expense - without the added cost of you having to figure stuff out for yourself.
