32bit vs 64bit OS

I'm running Win7 Ultimate X64 for about 3 months now ---> AwEsOmE! You can't go wrong! ;)

Office 2010 is going to be released in 64 bit, so if you're one of those users (you know who you are), you will notice a speed improvement. I've run into a few driver and software issues, but that's why I keep my old Windows 2000 box running next to my 64 bit box.

Office 2010 64bit is useless to me I must say because of there being zero to nothing when it comes plug-in support. If people come to the table, i.e. Nokia, I'll surely jump ship.

On a generic note ... I have tested pure 64 and pure 32 bit compiled code personally, both on raw hardware and under opensource OS's. The only difference was the flags passed to the compiler to designate 32 or 64, and I can without a doubt state that the speed of execution is infact approx 1/5 to 1/3 faster than 32 whilst performing business similar tasks. What MS says about 64 being slower at their conference is bull and made me laugh uncontrollably... more bits ... more processing time ... slower .. BUT GOOD FOR VM's ... hahahaha

The probably reason for this is the features of the 64 chips compared to for instance an i386. In other words more hardware optimizations for code compiled under 64bit compilers.

intresting

My friend got a brand new laptop with Windows 7 64bit on it pre installed and it only has 2GB ram. So I was thinking I'll just install 64 bit on my pc - I only have 2GB as well.

I just set-up an Acer with the 64bit windows 7 and it really is fast and nippy. They needed office 2003 installed and that too was easy it seems to have a directory for all 32 bit software so seems to support both versions of software if you have no choice. I need to research my adobe applications as I currently have 32bit but when I upgrade will get the 64 bit stuff.

I have a Sony SZ-38 notebook, and couldn't use W7 64-bit because :

1) Couldn't get drivers for all the devices (Sony support for older equipment stinks !!!)
2) It wouldn't see all 4GB Ram, I guess because the BIOS didn't fully support W7 64-bit.

So am now running with W7 32-bit (using Vista 32-bit drivers). It's OK, but would have liked to run 64-bit.

yeah seems we're finally starting to cross over. take Win 2008 R2 for instance... there is no '32-bit' edition, at all. wikipedia says "Support for 32-bit processors (x86) has been removed".

with moves like this, everyones going to have to wake up and churn out 64-bit drivers to stay in the game.

for the most part, 32-bit stuff runs on a 64-bit OS anyways.

.

You really should try and look for drivers on the chipset manufacturers sites instead of the sony site.

I switched to 64bit in Feb this year. All perfomance definately shot up! I can use all of my CPU's cores and my RAM. The one thing I have noticed is that, It hasn't frozen or crashed like the 32bit used to do. Gaming certainly improves.

64bit No Doubt!!!!

Hiya! Sorry to hijack the thread. My bro has 3GB's of RAM and a Quad Core Q9550. Would he be able to run Windows 7 64bit or would it be functional if he got the 32bit version?

Both will work.

Are pretty much all newish processors 64 bit?

Often doesn't work - Sony sometimes tweaks the hardware.

For example, in my case the nVidia GeForce Go 7400 video driver on the nVidia site doesn't work - Sony did something to it.

That's because FarCry 2 also uses the same engine as Crysis.

False, it uses the Dunia engine which is a heavily modified version of the first CryEngine. Crysis uses the CryEngine 2 engine.

P.S. There is no FarCry 2 with a 64bit installer or conversion patch for it, it is still 32bt as such.
