384 Kbps to 1 Mbps Upgrades

Im not sure what to do....I also checked that website which said my line speed is 1mb, yet im also still downloading at 384. Im thinking of going to Telkomdirect tomorrow and ask them to beef up my speed.

Im just worried I still have a 5102G modem which is seriously old, cant find firmware anywhere and when I go into my router settings it also says my connection is unchanged. Does anyone think that I might have to get a new modem if I dont find firmware updates?

Pretty sure if you go there they will just tell you to phone the call center.

Yeah good advice, I gave them a call instead eventhough calling Telkom is the bane of my existence. Luckily got through to a very capable seeming person, did the switch and checked my speed and all sorted. Getting about 94kb/s currently so pretty stoked!

I'm with Wazzup.net (Cybersmart company), are my 1mb line speeds acceptable?

I think they are pathetic, I want to move to Afrihost.

When I got upgraded, things were great. But now lately I can barely go over 50KB's

My mate's line hasn't been upgraded yet. The Telkom online checker reports 1MB, but his line still syncing at 384. He's in Durban and I live 5mins away from him. I've already have my line upgraded weeks ago.

Weird. Anyone know what I should do to help him?

He should just contact Telkom and ask them to upgrade his line (and possibly his account too).

My dad's line is also still on 384K. Phoned Mweb since his line is with them - they said it's not upgraded yet, even though the telkom online checker states it's 1Mbps now. I told them to do a port reset anyway. Didn't ask me to switch off the router...thought that's necessary to do a port reset? Still on 384K. Maybe I should phone telkom and ask them to do it. I suggest your friend should do the same :)

How long does it take for the line to be upgraded? Just called Telkom now and they said the line has just been upgraded.

Does 512kbps up & 512kbps down mean I have 1Mbps ADSL?

I've been using Telkom's ADSL upgrade page (http://www.telkom.co.za/checkadsl/) for weeks to find out if I had been upgraded (from 385kbps to 1Mbps) and it always said not yet. Today I called them (10210) to find out when I was going to be upgraded; they said I already was. So I ran a speed test (www.speedtest.net), and it said I was runnning at .4Mbps which I assumed was 384kbps, but when I went into my router's settings (Sitecom WL-613), it says the ADSL speed is 512kbps up and 512kbps down; I know it used to be 384kbps down and something less up, so it has changed (since I called Telkom). I also rebooted the router just to see if it would change, but it didn't.

So should I be getting 1Mbps down, or 512k each way?

Seems like you've been upgraded. The 512 down most likely indicates that you're far from the exchange, or that the copper in your area isn't up to scratch. What's your line attenuation and SNR? (should be displayed in your router)

Checked the stats just now - and the downstream has gotten much worse! I always used to get 384k downstream:

Stream Type Actual Data Rate
Up Stream 512 (Kbps.)
Down Stream 288 (Kbps.)

Operation Data Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin 12.0 dB 6.0 dB
Attenuation 30.0 dB 56.0 dB

Indicator Near End Far End
Name Indicator Indicator
CRC Error 540 14
HEC Error 115 7

[Sorry, formatting of the tables is bad, but I think you will be able to make it out.]

Does anyone know how to interpret the line noise and signal attentualtion stats? Since being upgraded from 384kbps to 1Mbps, my download speed has dropped! If my line is too noisy or the signal too weak, can Telkom do something about it? Would a better ADSL router do a better job?

These are the ADSL stats from my Sitecom router:
Stream Type Actual Data Rate
Up Stream: 512 (Kbps.)
Down Stream: 288 (Kbps.)

Operation Data Upstream/Downstream
Noise Margin: 12.0 dB/6.0 dB
Attenuation: 30.0 dB/56.0 dB

Indicator Near End/Far End
Name Indicator/Indicator
CRC Error: 540/14
HEC Error: 115/7

So, how's everyone enjoying their upgrades? Back on 384 I had downloads running 24/7 simply because everything took so long to come down, but now on 1mb/s I'm constantly running out of things to download. I frequently have a few days in a row where I don't download anything simply because I don't need to.

It's awesome. It just sucks that my parents have a 2mb line at their house, so whenever I come home from visiting them everything feels slow as hell in comparison. I'm going to see about getting a part time job next year, and a 2mb line is the first thing I'm getting. :p

My neighbour is still on 384kb, but my exchange is ADSL2+ enabled... it seems they moved me over but not her. We are in Constantia Western Cape.

My girlfriend is in Bergvliet and even though her line speed according to Telkom has been 1mbps since the upgrades started rolling out, her actual line speed is still 384k. Very frustrating.
