ok guys...girls, my contract with telkom expires soon and i want to get myself an uncapped account.
i will be on a 384 line with uncapped. what i wanted to know is
1. will i be able to play online with a 384 line?
2. what ISP would be best?

some ISP are really cheap with uncapped prices but then again, the saying goes "you get what you pay for" or something like that

Oh and i would prefer a month to month contract, fed up with 12/24 month contracts

i would appreciate any input from those who are on 384 lines and XBL or anyone with some valuable input

Thanks in advance

Can u really not settle with the 512 now 1MBS line ?? I played perfectly on a 512 line and now its brilliant on a 1mb but anyways if possible would be a better option downloads from live are quicker and more!!

I played on a 512 mweb uncapped never had a problem so had mweb as my ISP

Mweb has a very bad reputation for online games. Their pings fluctuate quite horribly as the auto shaper is constantly scooping up bandwidth for other purposes.

Cybersmart pings have settled from being very high the past month, but they're now shaping Rapidshare and torrents quite drastically. I mean between 3kb/s and 8 overnight.

Weird for me that I play perfect on a mweb acc as xbl manages games and ping times a lot better than what a pc and so forth does so mweb for me is working fine

I play on a 384k line on xbl with webafrica.

The delay is sometimes pretty frustrating (knifing okes etc is a little tricky), but it hardly ever jumps or freezes or anything...like maybe once or twice in 4-5hours. Works great in my opinion, and I play fps exclusively.

I would obviously rather have a faster line (512k/1M/4M) but the extra cost is not worth it imo.

I use a 384 line for xbl and psn(when it was up) and its fairly fine though depends on the game. Bfbc2 plays fine but crysis 2 for example sucks because of p2p.

Does your router support PPPoE Relay/Passthrough? If so, you can leave your uncapped account configured on the router, and just buy a couple of GB unshaped every month and set your Xbox to dial into this account.

i am using a 384 line with axxess international 1 GB lite option at R19 / GB and have no issues at all. its also not a contract as both the telkom adsl line and the axxess account is month to month - we use it for online gaming (xbox live uk and SA) and have no problems. if u can afford a faster line, then that should be better but the 384 is fine for me so far!

I used to play on a 384 line on XBL and had no problems. You just won't be able to host a game on 384 but there are enough 4MB guys to host.

Well seems all is well on a 384 then but really if ur able to afford a 1MB (old 512) plays brilliant and really smooth, 384 will work on a budget but 1MB will be hand with downloads and online play so its a best of both...just saying ;)

I don't do online console gaming, but I do alot of PC gaming. And what I can tell from ISP's is that Axxess will be your best choice. I would highly reccomend if you can, get a 512 line with Axxess. Reason being I am on a 512 but from about a week ago I'm starting to get about 700kbps. I don't know why but don't really care. ;) Only downside with Axxess is that their internet is supplied via IS ( Seacom ) which breaks down from time to time, and also IS has a star rating system. Which means 5 star - Highest priority and 1 star - lowest priority. But for the ping ( which is what you need for gaming) is often the best it can be.

384 costs:
Telephone rental - R114
Axxess data - (just uncapped account) R196
Axxess DSL line rental - R139

So far by my view, I can see Axxess as the best ISP, best service, best customer care and best value for money. Hope I helped and good luck. :)

Are you sure? I thought it was just Telkom? My cousin is on Mweb 512 and they still get lower speeds.

i use exactly that setup (384 kbps line) with Mweb and I play online with my xbox, i personally have no major problem with it as it runs pretty smooth. Only problem would be that if simultaneously someone else is using the same line to browse the net or something that uses the internet I will definitely without a doubt experience a minor lag :/

If your router supports QoS then you can allocate bandwidth so that you have a certain amount of bandwidth (say 512 Kbps) available for your Xbox.

Well if you are only paying for 512 uncapped MWEB will limit the accoun to 512 even if you use it on a 4meg line.

Yes I know, but you said that most 512 have been upgraded to a 1Mbps. So I was just pointing out that Mweb hasn't done that.

I like Axxess uncapped account while using their lite unshaped account for gaming. At R19/GB you can't go wrong.
