384DSL line to 4meg line

Hi all!

This is my first post on the forums and I hope someone could kindly help and I hope I can then reciprocate in the future!

I've just upgraded my line to a 4meg line (from a 384 line) which used to give me download speeds at a very constant rate of 40kB/s (it hardly ever went down or up!!!)(this was a megaupload download).

However with my new 4meg line, the download speed (for example a download from megaupload or from a european host) varies between 40 and 50 kB/s never higher never lower. This speed is incredibly SLOW! I believe I should be getting in excess of 400kB/s or atleast over 300kB/s!

I ran speed tests which gave the following great results:

Did you restart your router?
 
you should be getting 400k with the results from those speed tests.

but just a question is it a megaupload free account or premium?
 
Try downloading something from a local ftp like ftp.up.ac.za
 
dude, looking at that speed test, there is nothing wrong with your line speed, 3520 kb/s equals 440 KB/s
 
I've noticed on 3G/HSDPA that I get ~50kb/s on an international download [without a download manager]. But if I'm doing 2 to 5 different international downloads [without a download manager], each runs at ~50kb/s. Also when I do use a download manager I get ~220 kb/s on a single download.

Perhaps you are experiencing the same thing on ADSL. I think it also depends on the server you download from.

to answer the questions:

@Grouter: yeah I did, before which I was getting 384 line speeds so the 4meg line has definitely kicked in after the restart.

@4cer: Its a free account, but even still, before the upgrade I was getting maximum download speeds from my 384 line from the same account??

@everyone else: Thanks for the tips i'll definitely give them a shot!

The thing that i just find strange is that my speed tests are on par but my physical download speeds are lacking!
 
Your 'physical' download speed is the speed of the slowest link. If you are downloading from someone who is only uploading at 5kb/s, your download speed will be ~5 kb/s no matter how 'fast' your connection is.

Think of it as a tunnel - you have a great big tunnel but if there is only a trickle of water flowing through it, you can only get a trickle out, not the Nile.

I get what you saying but what makes me think is the fact that I used to get my maximum download speed from megaupload on my 384dsl line (40kB/s) so obviously they are uploading at high speeds? no? now with my 4meg line I get no where near my max dl speed in fact in its only a smidgen better than my 384dsl line?

Have you tried a download manager?:confused:
 
Haven't tried any:( any good ones to recommend?

Edit: I found one called Free Download Manager (FDM) funniest this is, is that it downloaded at 425KB/s!! lol!

So it must be megaupload! although i've tried a lot of other websites (sendspace being one) and they were still slow! is there any reason for that??? i use megaupload for a lot of things:(

Megaupload, rapidshare etc limit the speed for free users to about 40 - 50kB/s.

so you will never get higher than that from a free account.

Also remember the server load for megaupload and how many users are connected also makes a difference.

I would have thought that rather think of a tiny tunnel and a great big flow of water trying to flow through it, you can only get a trickle out, not the Nile :D
 
Try downloading from something like Nvidia for latest drivers. I normally get around 300-400KB from this site :) If you hit that then your on 4mbit/s I have a 4mb line and even on Torrents I normally only get 20-40KB/s but I have seen it go up to 250KB/s-300KB/s. I wouldn't expect 400KB/s constantly though. 300KB/s is something you will see every now and then.

Think the big tunnel he is referring to is the 4mb line and the trickle of water being the 5kB/s the other guy is uploading at
 
or ultra-v16, he might be referring to the other guy being the tiny tunnel and the file the huge flow of water

Either way, its k@k to have a 4mb line trying to get a file from someone who has dialup :p

hmm...you have a point there :D

Hate downloading a file off p2p or torrent and there only a few seeders with slow lines
