384kbps to 4096kbps advice please

Mine are on 384

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 383 kbps 123 kbps
Line Attenuation 25.5 db 10.5 db
Noise Margin 37.75 db 37.5 db

Going to upgrade to 4meg too in this week.
384 is a joke. rather going to pay R300 extra for what i am currently then wasting it on old age tech.
Do you guys think my figures is are ok?

@MartyMarts: your figures looks fine for a stable 4Mbps connection

@timvdwest: wow your figures are extremely good. You'll be able to easily get like 12Mbps without issues.

@Stevie G: your figures are slightly worse than MartyMarts, but you should still be able to have a stable 4Mbps connection

i currently have a Netgear DG834GUv5 Telkom Router. do you guys think my router is suffice or is there anything better on the market.

just a thought

@ Stevie G

Your attenuation and noise margin looks okay and you should experience a stable 4Mb service.
I see that your connection speed is only 383Kb instead of 384Kb - this is normally caused by not using a filter or using an old filter.

Cool. Thanks for the feedback.

Ok, so I upgraded to 4meg today. 3 different calls to Telkom:

1st call - grumpy guy says my exchange supports up to 10meg, I get excited but we get 'disconnected' before he could do the order.

2nd call - kinda friendly aunty says my exchange only supports 1meg :wtf: so I mentioned the 10meg story from the previous dude and she was all :wtf: I said I'd find out for myself and call back.

3rd call - very friendly and very helpful aunty says it's not clear on the system what my exchange supports and suggests I apply for 4meg and if it doesn't work out I can always call back and downgrade. So I went ahead with the order.

Get home and my modem is syncing at 4096000 down and 512000 up ... Yay!

Call mweb and switch over to 4meg uncapped - all happens within minutes after the call.

So yeah. Readings before:

My readings are as follows:

SNR Margin Down 28.0 dB
SNR Margin Up 17.0 dB

Line Attenuation Down 29.0 dB
Line Attenuation Up 16.0 dB

So I should be good to go 4096 then.

Readings after:

SNR Margin Down 16.0 dB
SNR Margin Up 12.0 dB

Line Attenuation Down 28.5 dB
Line Attenuation Up 16.0 dB

So far so good . . .

Looking good ^

The interwebs are so much more fun/faster/better now.

@MartyMarts whats your speeds on http downloads and torrent downloads on mweb.
does your streaming buffer at all or does it play flawlessly like mine.

just a thought

I'm running 4mbit
SNR usually around 8 downstream/12 upstream
attenuation: both sides over 50 :D

Only loses sync around once a week.

BUT after many fights with telkom and telling them i work from home, i got them to replace my cable to the pole, the cable from the pole to the sdc, from the sdc to the dslam and the underground cable from the dslam out :D

Apparently there were all faulty. hehe

I had small matter of Arsenal v Barcelona to tend to last night :D so didn't play much on the web. I checked up on my torrents after the game and they were hovering around 80kB but shot up to over 100kB here and there. This morning when I left at around 8 they were down to 60-something kB.

I'll watch some youtube videos tonight and I need to download the new PS3 update anyway so I'll post some feedback on those later this evening.

Woah that was a fast upgrade.

I also just requested a upgrade from 512 to 4096. Like I said in my other thread, I have my line and data in that "all inclusive" mweb package.

Mweb tells me 15 working days.

Meh.

Yeah it's best not to have your line with an ISP (besides telkom). Can't see how it would take 15 days though as theoretically all mweb need to do is make a phone call to telkom, request the line upgrade (which I was told by a telkom operator shouldn't take more than 12 hours) and then do the switchover on their side (which should only take a few minutes). So 15 days = BS story imo.

Yeh. I was on the verge to ask them why it could possibly take so long before I decided "ag ya know... I'll probably get some BS answer... just leave it be"

Marty,

Torrents are not a true reflection of your speed/ latency, rather stop all activity on the line and run a test at http://www.speedtest.net/\
This is best run before 8pm in the evening as the ADSL Network becomes saturated and you dont want that affecting your results.
Keep in mind as well that the quality of your bandwidth is also determined by the package you signed up for, ie. is it shaped or unshaped.
Your download/upload speed should remain the same regardless of your package, however you may find that if you have a shaped line that your latency is high.

My exchange supports 10Mb/s however my Line Attenuation and SNR stats were not good, so to improve them I asked Telkom to rebuild the port for my line at 8Mb/s, now my stats are excellent.
I have an unshaped WebAfrica account and on a good day at a good time can get as little as 12ms latency, with upload/download speeds reflecting what my line is actually synced at.

I often host other gamers when playing on Xbox Live, even though most of them are in Europe because my line stats are pretty decent.
Once the new underseas cable is ready WACS, then hopefully they will be even better.
If you plan to play PS3 online then your line speed is fine at 4Mb/s, even 512, but your latency is what really counts, a high latency the online gaming will seem jerky and you could time out.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
milo

Yea Kabraal, it's a hack having your ISP manage your Telkom Line Rental, it just means another step and person in the way to get things done when you need to make changes or check your line.
They claim to be able to 'manage' it for you but all it does as Marty pointed out is delay things. If i was you I would try and regain control over your line rental, unfortunately if you signed a contract you going to have to wait until its done.

In my opinion I cannot understand why people go with Mweb, they are absolutely horrible. They do have market share at the moment but that wont last very long because they have no been innovative and have not invested in their staff. New ISP's like Afrihost and WebAfrica are going to absolutely slaughter them with regards to sheer customer numbers in a few years time, and
hopefully with cheaper bandwith coming soon with newer undersea cables in the works there will be even more ISP's popping up and more competition for everyone!

You can work it out yourself from below:

Noise Margin (AKA Signal to Noise Margin or Signal to Noise Ratio)
The higher the number the better for this measurement.

6dB or below is bad
7dB-10dB is fair
11dB-20dB is good
20dB-28dB is excellent
29dB or above is outstanding

Line Attenuation
The lower the dB the better for this measurement.

20dB and below is outstanding
20dB-30dB is excellent
30dB-40dB is very good
40dB-50dB is good
50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues

You should be able to sync up to 11mbit on ADSL2+ theoretically. You however are still on ADSL1 (G.DMT) thus your max will be 4mbit (Telkom only go up to 4mbit on ADSL1) even though ADSL1 can do up to 8mbit.
