384kbps to 4096kbps advice please

Hi Guys we've upgraded from 384 to 4096 on Mweb (They contacted Telkom to upgrade the line speed), but are still getting 384 speeds :confused:

These are our values:
Upstream 256000
Downstream 1024000
SNR Margin(Upstream) 7 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream) 10.0 dB
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 28.5 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 52.5 dB

Are they not good enough? Or is there an error on Mwebs side?
 
You are only syncing at 1mbit. With an upstream of 256kbits. Both your margins are too low to go any higher
 
My router kept dropping connection on 4Mbit, actually only 3.4Mbit so TELKOM dropped it to 2MB whoot!

DSL speeds cannot be guaranteed due to factors including line length, copper quality and network availability. Telkom does not have control over the throughput speeds once the World Wide Web or your ISP's equipment is reached.

The speed profiles for the DSL services changes as per the profiles listed below. The speed of the service is the line sync speed between the modem and the Telkom exchange equipment, throughput cannot be guaranteed once you enter the www or your ISP's domain

The Fastest DSL service has 4 sub-profiles, which are used to stabilize customers' service that experience re-synchs (service interruptions) on their ADSL lines due to last mile distance, noise and attenuation. Therefore customers that experience problems on the service may be accommodated on any of the secondary profiles below:

Secondary profile

1. min sync rate: 640kbps; max sync rate: 4096kbps
2. min sync rate: 640kbps; max sync rate: 3072kbps
3. min sync rate: 640kbps; max sync rate: 2048kbps
4. min sync rate: 640kbps; max sync rate: 1024kbps

What the above entails is that if a customer does not sync at the profile listed in A above they will be accommodated on B, C or D depending on the line sync speed.

You can try to switching between G.Dmt / ADSL2+ modulation to see if that doesn't improve your SNR margins.

If that doesn't make a big enough difference, then you'll have to most likely ditch your ADSL modem for a better one, because yours doesn't seem to be capable of even syncing at 2Mbps with the distance that you're from the DSLAM.

Btw: what ADSL modem are you using? Perhaps a Netgear one?
 
Netgear indeed! DG384, its a couple years old. I will test your suggestion and post results as soon as I can find the passwords!

My SNR margin was about 35db at a time, but now it is 7.3? I'm on 384kb, will there be any limitations when going 4096kb?

You need to figure out what's causing that horrible Downstream noise margin and fix that, then with those attenuation figures you could easily get even 10Mbps. If its not a problem in your home (bad filter/phone etc) then its best to call Telkom out to check it out
