Hi all,

We currently run a 3 Gb account with Axxess and often need to top-up.

We're now looking at going uncapped due to the negligible difference in pricing.

I was considering Afrihost (due to constant issues with Axxess), but the reviews on here are not so favourable lately.

Average usage of our connection includes browsing, application downloads/updates, email, IM, and some P2P.

Who do you recommend we go with?

Thanks.

IIRC afrihost hasn't launched their 384kb offer as yet, the tests that are being done are on the 4mb line.

edit: the imagine offerings seem good to me

384kb and 512kb offerings were available days ago

Is it for business use or home use? The new offerings are great for home use, but it is still early days. For 3GB per month plus a few top-ups, going uncapped doesn't make sense to me.

If it is for business, stick with a capped account, but get a higher usage account. There are many ISPs to choose from. Try to get an unshaped account. If you really need uncapped, then go for a business uncapped account, which is unshaped and unthrottled, but more expensive.

If it is for home use, then go for uncapped. But expect to receive slightly lower speeds during peak hours...

Do you currently have a 384K line?

Home, TW. :)

Cost is a definate factor for us.

We currently have a 386 line and use Axxess.

With a 3 Gb account and a 1 Gb top-up we're at uncapped pricing, so why not change?

What's the reasoning behind slower speeds on uncapped vs. capped?

Thanks.

Hi Steven,

I've only just realized that this uncapped story is very new. I was under the impression it had been around a while. :D

Why (excuse my ignorance) are people still advocating a capped service with top-ups over uncapped?

I've emailed Axxess for their views too and will see what they have to say.

Thanks.

If you're a casual user like one of my colleagues who use their internet connection purely for internet banking and email, changing to an uncapped service over a prepaid account with bandwidth rollover isn't the best option financially speaking. In other words if you use 500MB per month (16MB per day) for a bit of surfing and email, you're better off with R152 to Telkom and +-R70 per gig for prepaid because you'll effectively be paying R190 per month instead of R350 for uncapped 384 (from Mweb). As soon as you start becoming a heavier user of more than a few gig a month, you're better on uncapped.

Don't let Telkom know that you have a 386 line, or they'll start charging you that little bit extra.

Definately not a casual user.

I have no issue using up a good couple of Gb given a chance.

Where do you get 350 from?

I was under the impression that the new 386 uncapped offerings ranged between about 190 and 230?

Is the uncapped service an additional 190-230 over a usual 3 Gb offering, or just 190-230?

Why is Telkom going to charge me more? :D

Thanks.

myIsp just released a special as well R159 uncapped ... so alot of options for you ! :D

Where do you get 350 from?

Mweb's pricing on 384 is either R219 or R349 where the latter includes the R152 payable to Telkom for the ADSL service. Remember that the cheaper one is only data, not access. If you choose to pay Telkom directly, the same R349 costs R371 (R219 + R152) so obviously better to get the bundled package. However for R197 (R349 - R152) you can get more than 6GB from Afrihost (or more than 13GB when they're running their 2-for-1 special). Bottom line is that unless you're using more than 6GB, uncapped isn't necessarily for you.

I will have a look at our billing tonight.

Thanks for the explanation.

Afaik we are paying Telkom directly for a phone line and ADSL.

One day I hope to live somewhere where I pay a fair rate, get decent broadband access, and have no shaping or capping BS.

One day I hope to live outside of Africa! :D

One day I hope to live outside of Africa!

But then you'd have to live with either horrible weather, obnoxious overweight people or ones with funny accents :) life could never be more entertaining than it is here in SA ... where else do you get political figures singing about shooting farmers with machine guns and then defending it as their heritage?

Thanks but no thanks.

I've had enough of this sh*t and am looking forward to becoming an in-shape person with a funny accent, living in cooler weather, surrounded by efficient, enthusiastic, and law-abiding people. :D

I'll happily sing songs about my new land, and shoot any intruders. :D
