3D Maps for SA

Yeah I checked it out last night. Very cool, but they do need to expand the coverage I think. Sandton / Rosebank both are lacking 3D buildings. And I reckon there are more people wanting it there than in Joburg CBD.

here's hoping for google navigation to be enabled (without having to use a hack).

Google does not own the map data in SA, and as such, they have to pay royalties for having turn by turn navigation. With this in mind, I highly doubt we will ever get turn by turn navigation.

Correct. They are gathering their own data one would assume, esp with the street view cars quite literally driving (plotting) every street in South Africa. I think it's only a matter of time.

Yes. Since 5.5

You have to try different install methods. The standard method worked for me. Xda link to ownhere apk somewhere in this forum or ask google.

Tried installing it via the phone as well as via adb, but with adb i keep getting permission denied or operation failed when trying to remount and obviously i cannot push it as the device is in read only then.

When you say via phone... Titanium backup maps, wipe data, uninstall, then streetview wipe and uninstall, then install ownhere (resign version). Thats what i did, among other methods at other times.

Ya thats the method, ive done it a few times by now. Tried with Brut too and it also crashed with Nav.

Try also clearing the dalvik cache via titanium after uninstall.

Other options:
  • after uninstall reinstall maps via market, then uninstall via market, then install ownhere.
  • use rootexplorer to manually delete the apk from system, then add the ownhere apk and change permissions.

Also PM me your email address, and i'll send you the apk. Maybe, just maybe somethings up with your download.

OH..ok...still works for me :-)

Download file...drop into phone memory card and install. Easy peasy :-) Nav works 100%. Might be old..but it works :-)

Tried it first and never worked that why i went looking for alternatives and found they hacked the latest 5.7 which def has a lot more features than 4.6
