What is different in 3D theatres - for example the Monte one that shows Avatar?

Two projectors to give another dimention?

they use 1 projector, but it displays the view for each eye at different frames

frames 1,3,5,7,etc for the left eye
frames 2,4,6,8,etc for the right eye

it happens so fast you don't even notice that ONLY 1 eye is actually seeing the screen at a time :)

they use a rotating wheel of polarized film in front of the projector to output images for the correct eye.

not sure what tech Monte Casino has but emperors use RealD technology.

but apparently IMAX 3D is even better than regular 3D theaters! :)

Now somebody told me that in the US they have 3D theaters that don't require you to wear glasses? How is that possible?

What's so weird about that? We have 3D TVs now too (that don't require special headgear to view).

Do we have any IMAX 3D theaters in SA? I wanted to go see Avatar in 3D at the IMAX in Menlyn but unfortunately they're only screening it normally.
