Has anyone been able to establish a 3G connection on a Windows PocketPC based PDA using a phone like the Motorola E1000 as modem? I have searched the web, tried all possible suggestions, but have so far been unable to establish a dial up (GPRS or 3G). It would be super-cool being able to browse at 3G speeds on PDA.
Vodacom4me.co.za don't even list the E1000, so no help from their either.
Perhaps Vodacom3G know the magic setup?

Should be able to setup the E1000 as a modem via Infrared or Bluetooth depending on the PDA. Will see if I can find more info on the E1000 setup but sure v3g will be able to help as well.

Have never tried it with my own E1000 but always thought it should be straightforward (ish).

What PDA are you trying to get to work with the E1000?

Anyone done this?

I have gotten it working with an Ipaq and my K700i using bluetooth. It was fairly straightforward as PocketPC picked it up right away. Not sure about other setups thought tbh.

I'm using an iMate. The iMate pairs with the E1000 and establishes the BT connection like clockwork. It also starts dialling, but then I get an error "Cannot connect for an unknown reason". I'm have tried dialling *99# as well as *99***1# through *99***6# with the modem setup string set to AT+CGCONT=1,"IP",internet. Have also tried AT+CGCONT=1,"IP","internet" and &FE0S0=0 as modem setup strings. If I don't use any modem setup string, the connection error changes to "The answering modem has disconnected" (By they way, I was able to establish a GPRS connection on the iMate with my Nokia6230 as modem, just to check if I wasn't doing something else wrong – but obviously this is not what I'm after – I can just as well use the internal cellphone of the iMate if I want a "normal" GPRS connection – I want a 3G connection. I have also been able to establish a connection from my laptop via the E1000 – it's just the iMate where I would really like a 3G connection, that's giving me trouble The Rom on my iMate is version R1.14.00; G1337.24; D1.72.00WWE).

IPAQ 4150 with E1000

I am also trying to connect the Ipaq 4150 to the E1000 to use 3g.....with no luck.

Any ideas?

Just tried this and voila it works:

I used the following setup:

- set Bluetooth Power On on E1000, then activate Find Me mode

- on PDA use Find Bluetooth Device , then pair it with e1000

- on PDA go to connection settings, Add New Modem connection, select Bluetooth modem.

- set dialing number to *99#

- next screen - login web, password web. empty domain, go to ********

- baud rate 115200, no wait for dial tone, 0 sec wait for credit card

-set extra dial string as following:
+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet"

-cancel if not connected for 120sec

-use defaults for Port Settings,TCP/IP,Servers

This is the same setup I'm using with the iMate, but it does not work. I have "upgraded" the ROM on my iMate to PPC2003 Special Edition - still no luck on connecting to the internet with E1000 as modem.

Once you get it working download skype for pocket pc and walla you have just halved you cell phone bills. E1000 in pocket connected to 3G and Imate. Imate dialing to wherever via skype. Total cost For SA call 70cents/min. Cheaper to other countries.

No seriously wont you do and give us a report back if it works as well as quality / lag issues.

After spending many hours trying to get my iMate to connect to the internet with the E1000, I eventually succeeded this afternoon. The solution? A firmware upgrade of the E1000. Vodacom informed me some weeks ago that I should take my E1000 in for a firmware upgrade. Never got round to doing it, until this afternoon. First thing I've tried after the update, was to connect to the internet from the iMate via the E1000. It connected first try. The solution for those of you having the same problem is therefore to get the latest firmware for your E1000. So until a PDA supporting 3G becomes available, this will be the way to browse the internet at 3G speeds from your iMate.

Menu -> Settings -> Phone Status -> Other Information -> S/W Version

Production version is: E1000_U_80.3E.29.01P

There is a new version under test. It ends in .92i or greater.

Please let us know to which version you've been upgraded.

were u upgraded the e1000 for E1000_U_80.3F.93I version?
can u send or were can i download?
a very very thanks
cheers

The E1000 is a truly appalling piece of hardware. Even *after* the firmware upgrade mentioned above - no small thing to obtain, since Motorola don't make upgrades available via the web - I still can't get it to work with my iPAQ 2750. The devices pair without difficulty and the iPAQ sees a dialup gateway on the phone, but that is the end of the relationship. American rubbish, and I'm sorry I took this upgrade. Back to the trusty Siemens S55 for me, and 3G be damned.
