3G Coverage - Melkbosstrand

Hi guys, do anyone have a rough idea of what 3G coverage i can expect in Melkbosstrand, more specifically Van Riebeeckstrand. I am not able to get adsl and therefore require a wireless solution.

If anyone have some experience of coverage in the area please share.. I was told there is NO 3G coverage in the area?? I was thinking of getting the 2GB + 2GB promotion from vodacom, but not if im going to struggle with connection, speed etc.

any comments will be much appreciated.

Acording to the Map , Van Riebeeckstrand Strand is not covered , other parts of Melkbosstrand is though. It would be best to check the availability with another 3G device if you can before deciding.

Thanks for the response, would my cellphone be able to give me a good indication? Shows 3G, 3G+ etc..would like to be able to see the actual upload and download speeds..

yes the phone would be perfect for detecting the 3G Network

...but not necessarily the best test to get an overall feel of what the network is like. If you can at least find signal with your phone I would still test with a 3G modem and in different location inside and outside your home. If you find good signal outside, but not inside and browsing and speedtests look ok then a high gain antenna will sort you out.

speaking from first hand knowledge, Van Riebeeckstrand is awful as it sits right on the border of signal coverage and when the towers breathe... well you can kiss the 3G signal goodbye!

I can ask the radio planners for an update if you like ?

Hey guys, thanks for the responses so far..i've gotten hold of a vodacom 3G usb stick and ran a speedtest.

Results:
DL - 0.64mbps
UL - 0.32mbps
Latency - 175ms

So the speeds are pretty bad, was hoping for at least 1mbps connection.
I only had it on for about 5mins, so not sure how consistant the connection would be either.

Is there any way to petition the cellular networks to do something about the abysmal 3G in the Van Riebeeckstrand area? In the old Melkbosstrand area I get 2mb+ speeds, but here it's basically non-existent. It would be nice if for once we could enjoy speeds that are not EDGE.

I live in Melkbosstrand and the Vodacom data reception is very poor. Very frustrating.

I also get "Sorry, the network is congested" voice messages when making phone calls. Had one just now.

MTN a much better option here.

The VC tower is in town, you need to use an external antenna, this is what I used:

There is an MTN tower in Duynefontein though iirc.

I used to live in Melbosch Village, and had awesome MTN 3G, much better than in Tableview where i am now

Yep, that's the one. If Vodacom is on there then I do not understand why I get such poor throughput as I'm right next to the high school. I can see the tower from my bedroom window.

I am in Tableview 200m from beach and use to get great 3G but of lat I get "NO SERVICE" or E no chance of 3G. I want to find out what changed? Have the moved towers or are they too congested? I have tried different phones , dongles and data sims in tables all with same bad result.
