3G data - does anything need to be set?

Got a first "taste" of 3G tonight when my handset (6630) suddenly managed to pick up a 3-bar 3G signal. (Quite strange - I'm out in Brackenfell with the map showing that I'm approx 30km away from the nearest 3G coverage in Capetown CBD.)

Anyway - tried making a call or two - worked brilliantly, even with a relatively weak signal.

Data however, is a different story. Tried browsing using both internet and myMTN access points - in both cases I would either get "Could not connect to network" or "page not found" errors. (1555 also terminated the call right after the welcome message, so not much luck there ...)

MTNBB, am I just picking up a test 3G signal possibly? Or do I need to have my SP enable something on my profile (like HSCSD) to access data? Any pointers would be appreciated.

Problem solved!
Seems to have been a temporary issue - this morning 3G data worked fine.

3G Connection

Hi I am using a Nokia6680 with a usim.
I stay in SummerGreens which is next to century city-sp is based.
When at home all i get is Yello Broadband displayed on phone with gprs icon-no 3g.when at work - cape town cbd and foreshore i am without changing anything on handset moves over to 3g status with full signal.
is there anything i need to set to enable/force 3g at home

There is a setting on the handset for 2G only or Automatic. There is no way on the handset to force 3G as the phone selects 3G when this is optimal.

Ok,so do i then have 3G coverage in Summer Greens.
FYI Summer Greens is next to Century City where MTN Sp IS based.
When i am at Century City I get a 3G signal.
The area info display is Edgemead/Sanddrift/Acacia Park.......and all three of them are further away from me than Century.

So has there been provisioned for 3g in summer greens?

SummerGreens has peripheral coverage - you may pick up the Century City 3G base station when conditions permit...

You can try force your phone to use 3G by following these instructions :

How to Manually select a Base Station

Note that if you use 81.1 menu option to force WCDMA, and you still dont get coverage, there is not much you can do other than trying an external antennae.
