3G Desktop installation problems

When I insert the data card into the PCMCIA adaptor slot, the PC hangs. My hardware specs is as follows.

CPU - PIII 850
GIGABYTE - 6WMMC7 - BIOS firmware F8 (latest)
RAM - SDRAM 256K
PCI->PCMCIA Adapter - Mecer (Chipset:Ricoh R5C476II)
Vodafone Application Version 5

I have:

* Updated motherboard BIOS
* tried different PCI slots

HELP!?
 
educated guess but the hanging generally occurs when
1)theres a hardware clash in resource usage;
2)dashboard ver 5 (personal op : CRAP!") try get hold of vr 4 (this is highly dependant on the firmware u're running on the "card" itself, l8tst release worx better wiff vr 5 dash earlier release vr 4;
3)also laptop make has a hella of a difference....wot make is urs?
ps try the faq alot of us have been contributing to it since its release so theres bound tobe a fix there................................oooooooooo and are u running any antivirus sftwr that might be blocking active content??

From what I read you are using a PC with the adaptor - I have the same problem that the PC hangs on inserting the card. I can boot with it in and I can take it out but I cannot reinsert the card. The problem started after upgrading the software to version 4 but I have subsequently upgraded to version 5 and the firmware to 3.1.8 but still have problem. My next move is a complete clean windows reinstallation but I need to find a time when the PC is not in use.
 
What OS and patch levels do you have on the system?

What happens when you boot the system with the card already inserted?

The Ricoh based cards have been behaving quite well so far. I suspect as Lipo said that it's a resource issue. It might be a bit of a trail and error, but see if you can assign resources manually to resolve the problem.

Sounds like the moment you plug the card in, resources are assigned to it that clashes with something else. You'll need to find this 'something else' and change it's resource allocation. Try disabling and unplugging as much as possible, i.e. start with just the motherboard and the data card. Disable all ports, etc.

Thanks for your response.

All OS patches installed. I also tried the manual resource IRQ assignment. No luck. Returned the card and cancelled the 3G contract. Will have to wait for you guys to test that new Elain USB offering. Just worried about my USB ports, because it is still USB V1.1.

btw Vodacom 3G, I still havent thanked you, that 3G Data Card that nobody wanted to replace, after speaking to the 155 representive that you asked to call did the data card get swopped out.

Working great now :)

I am not planning motherboard upgrade soon. Absolutely no need to. I agree that would solve my problem though, but spending R2500 just for 3G does not seem wise. Going to wait this one out. When do you expect that USB adapter?
 
It'll probably take a while to go through all the testing and becoming available via the retail channel, (if Vodacom decide to release it).

I suspect the same compatibility issue you have with the current motherboard *might* also stop the USB adaptor working on your system.

Also, I'm not convinced all the data cards will work with an external USB adaptor. There are some architecture issues with such a setup.
