I have lost my ADSLl line, thanks to Telkoms lack of services its been down for 5 days. What I want to know is if I were to use my 3G from my iPhone to play online (battlefield 3 and MW3, I'm getting withdrawn) How much would this chow and in how much time? 25meg/hr ? or is that to hopeful.

It would be good, I don't think you would get a lot of lag. Using 3G from a phone is slower than using 3G from a 3G Modem. Considering you have iPhone, you have the advantage.

The problem with the 3G is the fact that it costs alot, you will need to load a huge bundle, maybe that 20GB promo from vodacom for R499.

If you're playing against local people only then you shouldn't see any problems. But if you're going international things start getting crappy because 3G connections have notoriously crappy international latencies. Yes the download speed is usually faster but online games are more ping and upload reliant. Then there's also the matter of which network you use and if you're getting good enough signal from them.

Damn, well I pay R0.50/meg so playing battlefield 3 even on local servers is prob out. The quality I get from my MTN 3G connection is great well good enough to play local just too expensive if it uses 80-100meg/hr.

I hate Telscam

Get CellC while telkom is down, You get a 500mb reward from buying R50 airtime that expires on the Sunday of the recharge. Only kak part is you can only buy it twice a week and it has to be a R50 voucher

Vodacoms ping is huge. No point in trying to play online with them. The best pings I get are with 8ta (non-roaming). You can get their 2GB+1GB prepaid special for R149. In my experience, pings range as follows:

Vodacom: 200ms to 400ms
CellC: 90ms to 110ms
8ta: 35ms to 60ms

Woah those 8ta pings are nice. What modem/phone do you use?

Using a CellC white modem. 7.2mbps.

Tested again just now. This time to the Cape Town server since I'm in Cape Town. Better pings than I've ever seen elsewhere. Almost makes me want to start playing online games.

I had to switch to 3G when my ADSL line was down playing BF3, on the SA servers I got around 100ms ping, was ok most of the times, but did get a few disconnects.
