Hi,

My partner travels to Hong Kong and Tai Pei on a regular basis.

If he has say a 3g Card on his laptop, will he be able to get internet access when traveling to Hong Kong and Tai Pei?

International roaming has allready been activated on His cell phone.

Thanx for a great forum.

:)

You can roam with these guys in Hong Kong:

Hong Kong CSL
Hong Kong HUTCHISON 3G
Hong Kong SMARTONE
Hong Kong SUNDAY (3G)

Not to sure about Taiwan.

Remember you'll be paying their data rates, so make sure of those before you end up with a nasty bill!

Thanks for the quick response. Are there any contact info available ?

OK

So now I see that it is expensive, However, how do I activate this when they go overseas?

Do we do this locally, or do i deal with the guys internationally and how do we get support?

My partner is not the technical fundi. So It has to work first time or a Notebook becomes a frisbee!!

Yo must just make sure the SIM in the datacard is provsioned for International Roaming before you leave SA.

Once you log onto the network there (same procedure as here) you connect the same as we do here, you can also choose between 3G and or GPRS depending on coverage.

Just also bear in mind the cost, was in the UK last year, and got nailed R100.00/MB so it is expensive if you plan to surf, but for e-mails will be cheaper than dialing up from the hotel room...

Then there's always WiFi too?

Is the process then as follows??

1. I open the card for international roaming and I hop on the plane.
2. On the other side I switch on and log on ?

Should I not specify the networkoperator on the other side in some manner?

Do I get billed on my local account here?

Quite right, you'll do exactly that... Just when you are roaming you can choose your prefered network, unlike here where you can only use your home network (for obvious reasons)

As far as I know Vodacom's prefered international networks program is for voice calls and SMS only, so it makes no difference whom you choose to roam on, the rates are all pretty much the same, but check http://www.vodacom.co.za/rcrch.do?action=get for approximate pricing.

You'll get billed by your local SP for your international data, SMS, MMS and voice calls.

You could also use pre-paid? Not sure about pre-paid data over there though, you need to do some investigating, but for all the hassle, probably easier to bite the bullet when you get back to SA then to frustrate yourself trying to get the pre-paid going whilst away?

Hi
On the sftwr dashbrd click ; "Tools/Select Network"
once the search option becomes available select the relevant partner and set as prefered network (to eleviate net hopping which in itself can take the food out of your childrens mouths trust me been there!!")
if successful ie in a 3g coverd area the proceedure going forward will be exactly the same as if in SA .

hope this helps.......

On the subject of roaming, I see in the latest cope of YeboNews there is an "article" on fixed pricing for 3G & GPRS roaming in certain countries, here it is:

Vodacom is introducing new affordable flat rates for data
roaming, for Contract customers who use data services such as
the Vodafone Mobile Connect Card, BlackBerry and Vodafone
live! when travelling abroad.

The new flat-rate pricing structure will apply to GPRS and 3G roaming in
more than 14 countries with participating Vodafone and partner networks.
With this new pricing structure customers will pay R15.00 per megabyte
for all GPRS and 3G data roaming with the exception of SFR (France),
Proximus (Belgium), Mobilkom (Austria) and Si.Mobil (Slovenia), where
R30.00 per megabyte applies. These rates include browsing on Vodafone
live! but exclude video calls, SMS and BlackBerry.
BlackBerry roaming is charged at a maximum of R150.00 per megabyte
and is billed in one kilobyte increments. The R15.00 and R30.00 per
megabyte rates are billed in 10 kilobyte increments.
In addition, no subscription or activation is required and customers will
automatically qualify as soon as they roam on a participating Vodafone
or partner network.

Please note that customers roaming on any network other than
participating networks will be subject to the foreign network's existing
data roaming tariff structure. Roaming:
