Okay guys i dont know if i am just stupid or something because i cant find any info on the web but how do you set up your 3g on this model laptop? I have tried installing the newest vmc software from vodacom and it finds no device and all my drivers are installed . I know that specific laptops have specific programs eg , IBM has thinkvantage access connections . So what program does hp use?

Exactly what 3g device are you using? A Vodacom usb modem or an internal 3g modem?

Does the Qualcomm modem show up in device manager?

May be a stupid question, but are you sure your 8740w came with the embedded 3g card? Just because it has a sim slot doesn't mean the 3g device is there. Many of the Elitebooks come with the 3g card these days, but I had to purchase separately for my 8540w, hence the question.

well i called the shop where i bought the laptop and he says that it should work but how do i know if the hardware is installed ?

Check if you can see the modem under device manager. It should appear as a device named something like "HP un2420 gobi wwan" (sorry, not on my 8540w to check).

If you're feeling more adventurous, unscrew the small cover on the bottom and check if there is a card. Can't tell you exactly where the cover is on a 8740w, should be labeled with a wireless (WWAN) symbol. You're looking for something like this plugged in: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/e...74-1130363-64274-4128950-4129113-4128952.html

Also, assuming the hardware is present, just double check that the Gobi drivers were installed (HP connection manager itself does not include drivers for the hardware).
