I briefly got that (or something like it) coming up as my base station location. Connection strength was 4/5, much better than usual. I presume it is a broadcast message, not a new 3G transmitter in my area? Or are the Maties, as a student prank, able to provide me a better signal strength than Vodacom is?:)

Over last weekend?

Whenever there are special events such as the jool, Vodacom changes the cell broadcasts in the area to help with promoting the event.

This is what happened here and was on request of the jool committee.

Sometimes mobile base stations are also erected to help with load, for example at a big concert.

No, this morning. I am in Simonstown, a very long way from Stellenbosch. Wouldn't surprise me if signal was coming from Stellenbosch though. But why is their signal better than any of the 100+ base stations which are closer?

I am also getting the same message for some time now, in Stellenbosch. seems that 3G is a bit better now aswell

According to the local radio guys, it's not uncommon to pick up Stellenbosch from Simonstown!

I believe they've taken the jool cell broadcasts off by now.

Papegaaiberg still shows the jool id. Hope Vodacom is not going to pull a Cell C on us - last year they showed a similar jool message for almost 9 months after the jool finished.

EDIT: Coetzenburg also still shows the message.

to me it does not matter if it stays jool forever as long as I get a good speed

Download time: 11.437 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 356.7 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 43.7 (kiloBytes/second)

I think it is good for 3 G , only problem is I still pay R2 /meg BOOOOO vodacom

Hehe, I still have the MATIES 3G on my cellphone, I get excellent connection and no disconnections. On the bad side though, The 5 Nights of the Jool you couldn't phone on Vodacom network from arround 7PM to 4AM.

** NETWORK BUSY **
