Hi,

My friend has an issue with his 3G connection. As soon as he plugs in the plug and play modem and clicks on the Connect Button, his whole pc freezes. Control + Alt + Delete doesn't even work. A hard restart is needed. I even tried and removed the modem, but to no avail.

All his drivers are up to date and all his USB drivers are installed.

Any idea what it could be?

Does the modem lock up another machine in the same way?

What model is the device and what software/firmware versions are you on?

Which OS and service pack?

Check on the manufacturer's site for BIOS update for the motherboard.

When I got my K3175 it also freezed my computer and from then on ive had endless problems with my usb ports. Sometimes i get a "usb not recognized" or it is recognized and VMC says "No Device" and sometimes even my mouse is not recognized.
When i boot up im make sure no devices are attatched and then attach each one for one while watching it in device manager. If all else fails turn your computer off and disconnect from mains and leave it for a while so that the motherboard can reboot. This seemed to work for me.

Is the USB device drawing too much power?

Trying an USB 2.x device in an USB 1.x port will fail due to USB 1.x's limitations.

Try putting your usb modem in the oven for a while before connecting, that should solve the freezing problem. :D

Reminds me of my old D500-meltdown-in-the-oven-while-watching-a-movie of 2006. Don't ask.
