Hi Guys

So I have a 3G Internet connection and currently get around 1-3mbps speed. This is one a 7.2mbps Huawei modem.

My question is, if I upgraded to a 21.2 mbps modem, would my internet speed improve?

Probably not. You are limited by your signal coverage and possible throttling from your ISP. Best would be to get an external antenna for your modem.

Many factors need to be taken into consideration - example do a speedtest at around 1am - 3am you will notice your speed test will improve but during peak hours degradation(slower speeds) fluctuates.

In most cases yes you will get better speeds I've tried this out in several locations and everywhere I tried it the 21mbps modem got better speeds than the 7mbps modem, even at speeds of around 2-3mbps the 21mbps modem showed improved speeds by over 1mbps

Hi There,
While you may get better speeds remember it is a shared service so there is only so much bandwidth that needs to be shared.

An antennae may improve the speed too.

Tim

Nope, not in my experience. I tested with a 7mbps, 21mbps and a 42mbps modem and the only noticeable difference was when speeds were more than 7mbps - the 21mbps and 42mbps modems would then register better speeds and the difference between the two would again be not noticeable. Having said all that, I do prefer the 42mbps modem for 2 reasons (1) In the off chance the network delivers high speeds, I can benefit from it and (2) The modem runs a bit cooler than the other ones

7Mbps modems generally run cooler, with exception of early models.

I like HSPA+ modems (21Mbps and above) not because overall speed (my signal doesn't allow for it), but for the faster wake up from idle to full speed mode. Browsing experience is much smoother, but it depends on network. For 8ta I don't see a difference... strange.
