3g not?

eh, v3g, that would be "3,5G or HSDPA is specced up to 14Mb/s"

We actually need to become more disciplined in the way we use the various terminologies:

- Marketing terms - 2G, 2.5G, 3G, 3.5G, 4G, etc.
- Standards Bodies- 3GPP, 3GPP2, ITU, etc.
- Standards - UMTS, CDMA2000, etc.
- Access methods - WCDMA, etc.
- Modulations - QPSK, 16-QAM, etc.

The way I understand it, HSDPA is part of the 3GPP / UMTS / Release 5 specification, with a max downlink speed of 14.4Mb/s.

i agree with you v3g. thats why i think we need to rename the forum names to exclude technologies or exclude vendors. i have mailed rpm about this and he is taking it into consideration...
my apologies about the HSPDA comment - i just re-read the thread and see that you acutually did state UMTS. I originally thought you had said WCDMA is specced to 14Mb...
Me dumb, will read more carefully in the future :-)

Based on the fact that Cell C still won't even allow you the "priviledge" of paying them R25/Mb (last I heard) UNLESS you are on a contract, I wouldn't count on them doing anything in the next decade....

Cell C and MTN both have their new rates at ICASA waiting approval. Unfortunately this is regulated, and not entirely the respective vendors decision...

It can get hairy, trying to keep the different acronyms in the correct context. I normally fail dismally.

As an example on how confusing it can get, WCDMA was spec'd to 2Mb/s (as far as I can remember), HSDPA to 14.4Mb.

But, HSDPA uses WCDMA. So to say you can use WCDMA to get to 14.4Mb/s, is not completely incorrect :)

I believe a live HSDPA demo was run at Cannes at 9Mb/s. We should see commercial systems in 2006.
