I haven't been interested in 3G for some while, but after buying a iPhone last week I'm thinking of getting a 3G package of some sort, maybe something that rolls over each month, but I'm not sure if such a thing exists?

Also, I'm on Vodacom Pre-Paid, is it possible to get a 3G Bundle on Pre-Paid? I do have a contract sim card, would it be easier to use that? I also came accross this website: https://gconnect.wirelessg.co.za/3GPage.aspx. But it seems that it only works if you use their simcards :( What are my options?

Thanks

GConnect will work with a contract SIM if you provision/activate it with them, not with your prepaid one though.
They have unlimited data rollover where Vodacom is only about 60 days but you also have to authenticate each time to use data on your iPhone - I don't find that too bad to do though, they just launched a nice iPhone friendly login page so makes it easier. I am willing to have that slight hurdle to get the data rollover as I don't use too my 3G data.
You can get prepaid Vodacom data bundles - see their site for more info: http://www.vodacom.co.za/services/vodacom_broadband/cost.jsp

Thanks MikeCTZA, that helped a lot. Regarding the 3G service on your iphone... Will the iphone still connect as usual when it requires a connection to the 3G network? Will I still be able to download apps etc when using this 3G network? Basically, besides the login prompt, does it work the same way as the normal 3G Data Service (ie: Connecting to www.google.co.za using safari and having my iphone see that im connected to the internet in all my applications?)

Thanks

Any catches to the vodacom prepaid. Like maybe you have to use it within month.

I am looking for something like that, where i can buy a gig at a time to use for however long, like months.

Depending on your usage buying once off bundles at the start of the month should work well. Buying on the 1st of the month means you can make full use of the roll-over and split your bundle over 2 months. For casual use 75-100MB a month should do so look at a 150MB or 250MB bundle.

You can use any of the applications or Safari on your iPhone once you are connected to the GConnect data network, after the login it is no different from the Vodacom 3G network. So you need to at least go to the browser before you use an app for example.

I wrote a blog posting a while back on the GConnect option if you want to have a read (not sure if I covered all your questions, if not just ask) : http://mikectza.wordpress.com/2009/07/22/my-thoughts-on-the-g-connect-offering/
I just updated it yesterday with the new iPhone friendly web page options they now have.

So thats 2 months.
So instead of taking a 24 month contract (or iphone packages with data allocation) of say 250mb pm, i can buy 500mb and save about R100 per 2 months.
Thanks.

Yup, just make sure you buy your bundle on the 1st of every second month and you manage it to last 2 months.

One prob with g-connect, is that i am with Autopage (i know, but money talks and i get 10% discount from Discovery).

Awesome, thanks. So the GConnect login prompt won't automatically popup when a app tries to access the 3G network, I first need to go and connect using the iPhone connection app?

Correct. The iPhone connection app is just a web page, you can create a shortcut for it as per their guide by "To add a shortcut to the G-Connect Session window on your Home screen, tap on the plus (+) sign at the bottom of the screen; a popup window will appear. Select Add to Home Screen. A shortcut to the G-Connect session window will now be added to your Home screen. You can use this shortcut to return to the G-Connect Session window to login/logout."

One last question: DO I need to be in their coverage map in order for my 3G to work? Or will it work in any area where 3G is available?
