3g Pda?

Hmm, ok after doing a lot more research, A1000 is looking less attractive and a riskier option. (Crashing, rebooting, dropped connections). Paired with the fact that you can't actually get one yet at least until April.

I have given up on 3G in a PDA for now. My new plan is to go with IMate PDA2k until I can upgrade to 3G version in Nov/Dec.

Also it has the added benefit of having a built in Terminal Services client for managing those Wink2k3 boxen in a deck chair on camps bay beach :).

The Imate PDA2K is a stunning PDA/Phone, I just wish I could afford it. I'm kind of stuck between getting the SE 910i and the Imate Jam. I can't make up my mind which one I should go for.

I got my P910i 2 weeks ago and I love it and wondering how I have lived without it. I can't seem to get my hands on an Imate thought and would love to see how it compares.

I still think the SE P910i solutions is a good choice though and find mine extremely stable. Surprisingly.

on the i-mate?

It's quite an obscure manufacturer (i-mate is an OEM) and info is difficult to come by. Then a lot of the shops get a bit lost when they move outside the safe world of GSM voice.

Best bet, as always, is the Web.

Thanks v3g. Will keep looking. Had to send in my P910i this morning since it suddenly decided to freeze during charging last night. Looked at the links for i-mate and going to see if I can find out more from them today.

FYI - Imate is distributed in SA by Leaf Wireless http://www.leafwireless.com/imate/ (240 Blairgowrie Drive, Randburg). Taiwanese Company HTC (High Tech Computing) is the Imate's manufacturer and probably the world's biggest supplier of Pocket PC phones. Their upcoming 3G pocket PC phone - HTC Universal - will be rebadged by many carriers including Vodafone and Orange.

"Specs for the HTC Universal are quite interesting: it has 2 cameras. One for use when opened in landscape mode and points at the users face, the other is in the back of the keyboard pointing away from the user when the keyboard stowed. Even more interestingly the device has 3 radio's including 3G (3G, Wifi and GSM/GPRS) and its got a VGA resolution screen"

I'm relying on you V3G to make damn certain this phone gets to our shores :)

"Recent announcements come with more confirmation of features such as Bluetooth, WiFi, 1.3 MP outer camera, and the VGA video inner camera. But now the size of the device has been officially released at "5.2 inches wide, 3.2 inches tall, and .85 inches thick" as well as the fact that it will have 128 MB of RAM, and use a 520 MHz Intel Xscale processor. No word yet on which operating system it will support which leads many people to believe that it will come with Magneto, or Windows Mobile 2005."

If you in Cape Town, give Justin @ SA-Explorer a call 021 409 7891 he can help out as they also distributors for IMate stuff.

Re: Motorola E1000 as a GPRS web browser or GPRS modem

I have managed to get the E1000 to work on the MTN & VODACOM networks using GPRS, both on the web browser (Normal HTML files) and on my HP Pocket PC. I have tested this phone extesively, personally, and have found it to be a fab fone, but there are some draw backs.

1. Do a S/W upgrade the minute you receive it
2. It is not a nokia and does not operate the same way. Crashes from time to time, but then again, I suppose the is the draw back of having a non-symbian fone.
3. backlight stays on whilst charging.
4. Doesn't charge sometimes.
5 Requires a reboot some times - I have spoken to Vodacom Customer Care, apparently, it was the first batch of phones out, the latest batch is 100%.

Has anyone else had issues with the fone? Email me [email protected]

One of the links above indicate that Vodafone is releasing the VPA IV under its own brand. Does this mean that we can expect it in SA soon? And how "soon" is "soon". Can Vodacom3g perhaps tell us when they expect this PDA to be available locally?

I got the Motorola E1000 for e-mail and web browsing, only to find out that it cannot browse normal html web pages. (The info available on the E1000 on various web sites, is very confusing (even on Motorola's own site) as one is let to believe that the phone can browse normal html pages as well, which is not true). As a workaround, I tried to use the E1000 as a 3G modem with my (windows PPC based) PDA, but despite spending many hours, I have been unable to establish a GPRS/3G connection from the PDA with the E1000 as modem. The E1000 is therefor useless to me.

Local iMate Distributor

The local distributor of the iMate series of devices is Leaf . Try emailing them for a release date. (They sell direct as well)

Yeah, but this iMate is not 3G. I have an iPAQ 6340 - similar specs.

What is this HTC business I see up above? Pray tell...
