Personally, I've had little to complain about during my time with CellC. It's been almost 4 years, and problems have been small and minimal. One thing that's been increasingly worrying me, though, is their mobile data support. They (still) only have at best EDGE. Compare this to Vodacom, who plans to have 7.2Mb 3G within the next 2 years or so.

A little while back I went into a CellC store to sort out one of those little problems, and I asked about the future of 3G and CellC. I was told that CellC 'had no plans to upgrade to 3G' as they didn't believe target users were 'interested in the service'.

Currently due for an upgrade, I find myself wondering if I should switch network, as I am actually 'interested in the service'. So I phoned the CellC helpdesk and queried about 3G. I then had a callback from the upgrade representative and asked him too.

Apparently, CellC is in the process to rolling out their 3G support. 'The technicians' are busy with it. Of course, no one knows when it will be ready. They can't even give me a timeframe - 1 month, 2, 6, etc. Nor can they give me the contact number of anyone who does know.

Surely someone knows? I'm asking everyone here, since the majority of people here seem to be more aware of things then anyone I could get hold of at any helpdesk. Anyone know when CellC will have 3G support?

From what I have read, your first informant gave you the correct information - CellC are not going to introduce 3G in the foreseeable future. If you think about their target market, which is essentially voice driven, if any browsing is done it will be occasionally on the cell phone itself and EDGE is probably OK for that.

Cellc technical dude was with me the other day and he said no 3g.

I've been having issues with Cell C's GPRS and EDGE stability lately with regards to MXit. The MXit team confirmed that Cell C is upgrading to 3G.

im switching over to mtn just because cell c doesnt have proper data services. its a pity though cos i didnt have many problems with thier service.

Cell C is (from what I hear) working on other broadband solutions (Wi-Fi or WiMax) but not 3G.

So you would rather believe MXit team than a Cell C Techie??

Look at Cell C's financial woes, I doubt if they would upgrade a service they are not relying on for major income.

I hope this is real.
It is not real, CellC is not going to provide a 3G network anytime in the near future tending towards never, if however CellC gets bought out [e.g. by Virgin Mobile] then this might change, although I expect WiMax is more likely than 3G, it is simply too late for CellC to rollout 3G and too late to compete with both Vodacom and MTN, also CellC doesn't have enough customers to justify the considerable expense of a 3G network rollout. CellC's cluelessness resulted in CellC missing the boat.

IC has spoken...;)

Both Vodacom and MTN have invested billions of Rands in their 3G/HSDPA networks, and there is even talk that these two operators are currently making a loss on their mobile broadband products. This is one of the reasons cited by Cell C CEO, Jeffrey Hedberg, for not investing in a third generation data network.

super slow

well last night I phoned VM help line because the connections were at best miserable and the help desk lady said something VERY interesting to me.
she said that there will be some technical difficulties as they are connecting up the 3G base stations..............:eek::eek:

INTERESTING !!!!!!
