Hi there

Where can we purchase a 3G router on contract as we need one quite urgently? It is for my work, based in Pretoria.

I need to let my work know which shops have stock so that we can go and pick it up immediately - telkom landlines keep getting stolen.

Does it have to be on contract? - there are a few local sites that sell the Linksys WRT54G3G router at a better price than you're likely to see at a cellular retail outlet - although best to shop around & compare prices.

@ IC - do you have any experience with said Linksys product, as I want to ask a couple of questions.

1. Can it handle VPN sessions? (want to set up an addy at dyndns.org and be able to log in to the site remotely)

2. Can it block outgoing sessions? Incoming VPN must not be blocked.

3. Can you connect it via Ethernet to a host PC?

I don't have personal experience with the [searchforum]Linksys WRT54G3G[/searchforum] router, but there is a thread about the WRT54G3G where you will probably find answers to those questions - double check, but this is my understanding:
  1. Yes, dynamic DNS is supported - probably dyndns.org &| others, and VPN.
  2. Doubt outgoing sessions would be blocked. Incoming VPN sessions will probably require the [searchforum]Unrestricted APN[/searchforum].
  3. AFAIK the WRT54G3G router is both a 4 port ethernet switch as well as a 54G wifi router, so yes you can attach it to something else via ethernet cable.

Hi-Fi corp in Centurion lake mall has stock, seen them on the shelf.

There is a few setting you can tweak on the router, for blocking options never look at the settings in that much detail.

It has 4 Ethernet ports and Wireless., as well as a port for a additional ADSL modem.

can you get a public dynamic IP with 3G!? how?

I use an old pc with a pci-pcmcia converter card with my huawei 3G/HSDPA card to do my routing and then an normal WRT54GL as an AP. This setup works great and i'm sure it is cheaper then to get one of those 3G routers.

Phone Voda or MTN and ask them for a VPN apn.

It will be alot cheaper and alot more work as well the way you are doing it. :p

Ok - work have got a Huawei E220 USB modem - and they want myself to test this VPN thingy first.

I only have the SIM number - is it possible to unlock this SIM for external access from this SIM number?

On the papers we don't have a telephone number (082-xxx-xxxx) for this modem.

Yep, VMC-Lite version 3 has SMS functionality, otherwise use HMP or HMC or VMC version 9.2, to send the SMS from the data SIM Card to your own cellphone number, you could also put the data SIM Card into a cellphone and SMS your cellphone number - probably what v3g intended for you to do :o :).

Just one thing I think I should mention about the WRT54G3G router, is that the router only works with PCMCIA data cards - not sure if the new Express Cards are firmware supported yet inside a converter|adapter inserted into the router's PCMCIA slot, i.e. the WRT54G3G router will not be able to use an E220 to establish an HSDPA connection.

The Express cards do work in the router with an adaptor.

The Linksys also have an SMS capability nowadays. Or am I smoking my socks?

Using the 'internetvpn' APN.

D-Link have a 3G/HSDPA router that is supposed to work with PCMCIA and USB modems, I went to the product launch last year. I'll have a dig and post details.

You can also send a 'please call me' to find out the number:
Code:
*140*<your mobile number>#

 I wasn't sure :).

True, but I don't think T_L's company has bought a WRT54G3G router yet, but good that he knows that the latest firmware does include SMS functionality :).

Nice, I hope it will work with the E272 as well - should do :).

Yup, just needs a firmware update, well they specifically mention the E270, but I think the E272 has the same insides, it's just the girly version. ;)

The router in question is the D-Link DIR-451, specs here.
